Serious Lord of the rings question needs answers.
In the intro Galadriel tells the story of the ring. Part of this story is “ History became legend, legend became myth, and for two and a half thousand years, the Ring passed out of all knowledge.”
Passed out of all knowledge. And yet somehow everybody knows about the ring. Gandalf, Aragorn, Elrond, Galadriel. In Rivendale Aragorn even visits a little shrine deal with Isildurs sword. Seems plenty of people know about the ring. Doesn’t seem to have passed out of all knowledge at all.
So Galadriels intro is malarkey.
Pls explain this situation. It’s been weighing on my mind.

Been awhile since I’ve watched the movies or read the books but I believe the elves kept to themselves so in that sense their knowledge was lost to the rest of the world. Gandalf wasn’t sure until he found a scroll with the history in Minas Tirith and Aragorn was more or less in exile so not exactly passing knowledge around.
I could be way off though

Passed out of all knowledge basically means no one knew where the fuk it was because it was at the bottom of the Anduin river. Not that no one knew about it.

Pretty sure she meant that ALMOST all knowledge of the ring was gone. Obviously there are some 5,000yr old elves and ass hole Sauron who remember all about it. Even Gandalf had to do some research in the archives to confirm. But for the most part, all knowledge of the ring was gone.

If you remember the movie, Elrond says something like "I was there the day that the strength of man failed". He went to mount doom with Isuldur and was shouting at him to throw the ring in.
As Elrond personally witnessed this, he has direct knowledge. He also has one of the elven rings.
Sauron made the ring that the story is about, but he also made 9 for men (they became the nazgul), 7 for dwarves and 3 for elves. Galadriel and Elrond each had one of the three elven rings and are both thousands of years old.
Gandalf is an immortal demigod (maiar) on the same level as sauron, who had most of his powers taken away so that he could serve as an advisor and not become a rogue threat.
Aragorn is a direct descendant of Isuldur, so he was told the stories growing up.
Isuldur was killed 2500 years before and the ring was lost in the river where he was killed. That is the last that anybody knew about it.

The thought the ring was lost forever. Sauron was defeated and had faded into almost nothing. Gandalf/Olorin/Mithrandir was eventually sent to Middle Earth to contend against the will of Sauron. You know why? Because he feared Sauron. The Valar knew Sauron wasn't gone. He had to be watched for if he came back. But he had been gone so long Gandalf had hoped he was gone for good
We don't know what happened to the Dwarven rings. But Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond had the Elven rings. Gandalf had the ring of fire.

just because it became myth doesn't mean you don't know about it. they wouldn't expect to see it in their lifetime. but they know the history of legend.
it's like you forget about your favorite candy and then happen once upon it again. it is still in the brain cells so it triggers the memory.
what exactly is the problem?
