they have been bred to have loads of wool like they do now, id say they had less or shed it originally.

They migrated south for winter and did not grow thicker, or they stayed north and without a barn to stay warm they liked their thick coat. Protects against wolf bites maybe.
In the summer they shed it.

The sheep we get wool from now did not exist prior to animal husbandry. Thousands of years of human interaction have given us the modern lamb, and all modern farm animals.

domestic sheep have only existed for like 12ish thousand years. Their wild relatives don’t have any of those wool issues.

It's the same difference as ancient and modern humans, we're all beta and domesticated to an extent

Sheep, like bananas, were bred for a purpose. Sheep, for wool. Bananas, to become atheist's nightmares.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

They naturally have less fur in the summer like every other animal. Also as mentioned, we bred sheep to have fuk tons of wool that requires regular shearing.

This is called domestication of sheeps. Just like how most dogs we know won't survived in the wild and are not found in the wild.

maybe the sheep with thick coats were the ones that would get hunted due to hampered mobility so the ones that didn't grow as much would be selected for?

now that many are domesticated,, a thick coat is no longer selected against?
