$2.5M USD profits vanished by HODLING (stocks & crypto)
6 months ago i wrote about my friend who had turned his initial investment of around 8k USD into a whopping 2.5M USD in 2.5 years. Now most of his profit is sadly gone as the market has been brutal to speculative assets and altcoins especially. I have lost 100k USD in the past couple of months and it has been brutal, i can only imagine what he is going through. I never understood why he still was hodling when he had insane profits, but i guess greeds gets the best of us. I have been in the same position (turning 10k into 80k) and got burned by being greedy. Point of the story is if you have insane profits, take them!

I invested probably 20k since 2017 and my portfolio was around .5m. pulled out 100k for piece of mind. Portfolio down to 300k now but i am not losing sleep. Continue to DCA

I like all the companies Im invested in.
I understand why people in coins are nervous: its literally a speculative asset with zero barriers to entry. Of course you dont 'hold' that.

The market is a casino....
I know so many people who ended up making a lot of quick money and then eventually losing it all
The worst thing that can happen to someone in the market is they make huge, easy gains. Then they think "this is easy!" and get overconfident and lose it all.
The only safe way is to withdraw all your profits and only play with a small amount, continually.
I learned this lesson hard....made $100k and ended up losing it all.

Got out last month, when crypto took it's first big drop. I was negative in crypto, but my gains in VTI and VOO still had me ahead. If I still held, I'd be down about 30% total right now.

I remember when I started trading, had no idea what I was doing, and started making huge money. Turned $10k into $100k and was eventually trading with a $200k portfolio.
I lasted about 8 years before I lost it all. The more knowledge I gained, the less profitable I started becoming. I made more money in the beginning, which seems to be the case with everyone that starts playing the market. And everyone thinks the same...."WOW THIS IS EASY MONEY!!!"
Its a huge rush
I eventually started trading with some very experienced guys....and no one made it. Even this guy who worked in finance and Wall Street failed. Technical analysis doesn't mean much of anything anymore and neither do fundamentals.
The only smart way to play the market when you achieve big gains, like OP's friend is to withdraw it all and start again with your original investment. He should have withdrew all $2.5 million and started with $8k again.
But people get greedy....they think the good times will never stop, he probably thought he could turn that $2.5 million into $10 million and so on....until he got burned.
There's a reason over 99% of retail traders eventually fail within 1-5 years.
The only people consistently profitable over large periods of time are the hedge funds and algorithms.
