Not everyone is but the more competent and trained you are, the less afraid you're likely to be. Also the chaos level in that situation was relatively low, he had both the guys in front of him and they were cornered behind the register.

Denial. Young thugs think they’re invincible and when death comes, it takes a moment to come to the understanding their life is ending at a time they thought death was in the distant future.

I’ve seen more people die than most. Working in a trauma center in a city, it plays out similarly every time with thugs. Its not until they get to the trauma bay and the staff is serious af that they finally say “omg, don’t let me die!”. It hits you right in the feels. Sometimes they come in looking ok; talking, sitting up…then, 20 mins later they’re laying there dead with their chest cracked open with the trauma doc doing cardiac massage.
