From the intro to Den of Thieves. My question is about the cops who respond to the scene. The main crew of the movie perform the heist with automatic weapons, armour piercing rounds etc. They're former Spec Ops guys.


I'd think any regular black and white arriving on the scene would be totally outgunned with only service handguns, but the responding cops here are already armed with ARs.


Wondering if this is actually normal in the US? Was there some sort of precedent or change in regulation after the 97 Hollywood Shootout, or something?

Yeah most have ARs, shotguns and handguns. Yes it changed after Hollywood shootout, most big city police departments have low level military equipment too.

Yes local police are usually the first on the scene because there’s a lot of them and they’re closer. Many departments have ARs in their squad cars in case of a shootout.


What’s not realistic is :

County Sheriffs fighting with the FBI

The FBI hates cops and vice versa because one has more jurisdiction but the County Sheriff has just as much jurisdiction in their county as the feds

gang of outlaw sheriffs

It’s usually the cops that are like this. Most sheriffs are elected officials and try to serve their communities right.

Deputy’s are also screened better. City police however usually have gangs in certain departments like narcotics, anti gang unit (lol) and stuff like that.

Usually the departments that have a lot of contact with drug dealers or poor/ghetto people. Training Day is pretty accurate in how the corruption works but isn’t a true story in of itself.

Well its normal where I live. Even the biker cops have AR's on their bikes now ready to go srs.

I don't find anything unrealistic about that particular scene, cops are absolutely more militarized today than any other time in US history.

I think they have them in the trunks of most cop cars. And yes, from what i understand it all changed after the la shootout

I don't live in the US so I can't comment on the realism. I just know that where I'm from, if street cops were arriving on the scene of a heist where the perps had armor-piercing ARs, the cops would get absolutely mogged and would have to retreat.


I would have figured it would have something to do with the Hollywood shootout.

AR's in the cab of a patrol unit is the common standard now. Also that response isn't really how well trained/experienced officers operate anymore. Only an idiot rolls up to something like that lights and sirens blazing to get lit up by gunfire.


Also assuming you are second unit up and someone is already engaging an officer it doesn't make sense to drive up into a gunfight. I can park a distance off and put them down from anywhere from 100-400 meters with relative ease and safety. No reason to drive into a hail of gunfire next to my buddy who's pinned down.


Entertaining movie otherwise.
