Moving from Toronto to Atlanta
I am considering moving to Atlanta from Toronto. I could get a job similar to what I have but the cost of living would be dramatically lower than Toronto. The housing prices here are pure aids.
For anyone living in ATL, how do you like it? What things do you dislike?

Like most cities the trick is to not actually live in the city but in a nice surrounding suburb. Especially if you have kids. Do NOT put them in public school in the city core, they will be bullied relentlessly for being white. So get private school if you plan to live in the core.
Traffic is ass, beware if you have to commute to work

I really like Atlanta. The downtown sucks, but Buckhead and some of the things in that area are great. I probably wouldn't have liked living there directly out of college(as it's kind of a spread out place and difficult to get around), but it's a lot more attractive once I hit my late 20s and 30s. It is a good compromise between being a nice area close to an urban area without being a cookie cutter suburban hellhole.

The two are culturally somewhat similar in that the people are smug, women are arrogant and narcissistic, the scene is heavily based on clout, and everyone is rude and passive-aggressive. Congratulations on going from one garbage city to another.

Atlanta is Detroit 2.0 in about 5-10 years.
Seriously. Born and raised there. Don't live there now but family still does so I'm back often. Don't want to this to come across as racist but it's ghetto as f*ck. There's nothing wrong with black people who have their sh*t together. But the low IQ ghetto blacks are the ones who flood there streets of ATL. The Braves literally abandoned the city limits for a reason and posted up outside of the perimeter if that tells you anything.
If you can live up 400 (Alpharetta or north of it) you'll be in good shape for a little while. Perimeter area used to be a decent place to live but the trash is pushing outward and perimeter is starting to become a cesspool. It's semi-livable currently but I'm betting it won't be worth being there in 2 years tops so wouldn't recommend it.
If you can get north enough like I said you should be ok. But expect lots of ****** in that area. Aside from that, you'll get hit with lots of traffic any time you go anywhere with no public transportation options (not that you'd want to be on public transportation in that metro area but because it doesn't exist at all everyone drives everywhere).
Expect lots of gays in the city. It's a magnet for gay people. UGA is also known for a heavy gay scene and is like a mini-Atlanta if you will.
The good parts are that it stays warm 10 months of the year. There's lots of great hiking both in the metro area close by and more serious hiking within an hour or so up north in the Appalachians. Lake Lanier is also a quick drive away if you stay near Alpharetta or north of it like I'm telling you. People are generally nice outside of the perimeter as well. One of the best airports in the world if you like to travel. Personally I can't stand flying anything other than Delta and since ATL is it's hub they run everything through there so you have easy access to the best airline for anywhere you want to go. Plenty of good beaches within driving distance. Plenty of SEC schools within driving distance if you want to hit up the college scene on gamedays.
Any major city has negatives, so if you can avoid going directly into the city as much as possible and maximize the positives of the area it's a good place to live. It can easily be a nightmare though as well. And I do fear it's getting worse. Being my hometown I hope it doesn't continue trending how it has been because the northern parts of GA are still very much livable. But if Atlanta continues to push outward with it's sh*ttiness the viable areas that still exist could make the entire state hot garbage.

"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Both Toronto and Atlanta made a bid to host the 1996 Olympics. You all know how that ended..
Just a fun fact.

Everything he said is true and I'll add more to it.
Due to the film industry finding a new home in Atlanta, the city has become flooded with annoying California liberals that bring their politics with them, hence it trending more blue and even going to Biden in 2020. Add to that racist blacks from the North moving to Atlanta and you have soured race relations compared to other big cities in the south. I'd say the city has pretty much become the LA of the south with a clout and social-media obsessed culture. Everyone is trying to flash and show out and you lack that cool welcoming southern vibe as a result.
This even shows in Athens which gets a lot of Atlanta suburban kids. Go to a Tuscaloosa in Alabama and see sorority dimes everywhere but then visit Athens and start asking yourself why it feel so much like Portland, OR.
If you are a young single guy or a single guy in general, avoid Atlanta.
The dating culture is built on clout which runs back to who you were in high school, even if you are in your 20s. While outside the perimeter can be great, most people are settled down with kids so if you are not about that family life, it's isolating.

Why? I’d rather live in Toronto than Atlanta and it’s not even close. If T.O. were part of the U.S. I’d have moved there years ago. I understand the lockdowns are bad, but it looks like Ontario conservatives are finally standing up for their rights. Once the pandemic is over, things will return to relative normalcy. Atlanta is just as liberal but the quality of life is worse.
I’m in Atlanta all the time and I used to be in Toronto all the time before Covid hit. Atlanta is a chithole, but everyone keeps moving there for some reason. Hollywood has outsourced to Georgia which has made things even worse politically as well as making it more expensive to live in ATL than it’s worth.
Most southern cities are terrible compared to those in the Northeast or Canada. Poorly designed infrastructure designed for half the population. Congested with traffic because there’s no public transit or walkability. Transplants flooding the area causing housing prices to skyrocket. You’re going to have no choice but to be a suburbcel. I hope you like soulless plazas and 6 lane highways. That’s where literally everything is going to be. No character. No culture.
As for the issues mentioned above. I tend to agree. Atlanta is seen as the Black Mecca of excellence, largely due to a clever marketing campaign by the city and Hollywood pushing that image. As a result, there is genuinely a large population of wealthy Black folks who have invested businesses there. The suburbs are integrated and IMO better than most other cities. However the city itself is one of the most crime ridden ghettos anywhere on the continent. Racial tensions are mixed. There’s a large segment of Blacks in Atlanta who want to self segregate and keep Whites out of their city. Srs. It’s a growing movement and very sad to see.
If I were you I’d stay in Toronto. You’re fortunate enough to live in one of the wealthiest, most prosperous, cleanest, safest major cities in North America. The city is laid out in a navigable way. City neighborhoods are actually livable. Suburbs are still beautiful. It’s better integrated with less racial tensions, better food, more diverse cultures. Everyone seems to get along in Toronto. Are you just afraid of snow? I see little other reason to leave your great city ded fkin srs.

Personally I’d favor Raleigh (friend of mine in Cary and it’s awesome plus Wegmans is there). Charlotte is a good city too with more southern culture. I’m cautiously optimistic about NC’s future, however. I’d bet on it going the way of Georgia within a decade. Growing too fast. Too much blue. If I were a careercel dad or otherwise settled in life, I’d choose Northern Virginia in a heartbeat. DC suburbs are some of the best in the nation. Good schools. Big homes. Beautiful family friendly walkable towns with historic architecture and upper middle class welcoming people. Still growing at a slower, healthier pace. Proximity to DC is a huge plus. Hop on the Metro and enjoy all the amenities of the capital and avoid the traffic. Loudon, Fairfax and Prince William Counties are almost all good places to live. Downsides are just the liberal bend and snobbiness among people who “know somebody.”

ATL crew. Stay north of I-20. Best up the spaces around and between I-75 and I-85. That strip up Route 400 is the cream of the crop but it's expensive. I live NW but kind of out there. Prices are considerable but have the benefits of Atlanta.

I don’t know if it’s any worse than other major cities though. I think I’d still live in Atlanta over LA, NYC, Chicago, Houston, Austin, Boston, Detroit, or Miami.
I think it’s easier to escape Atlanta than those others and enjoy the good parts. It’s much cheaper than most major cities and it’s more spread out. It’s more of a metro area than a city tbh. Most of the population actually does not live in the perimeter. So as sh*tty as inside the perimeter can be, there’s still places to live and not hate your life if you’re selective enough and live within that bubble.
I personally don’t want to move back because I simply prefer smaller cities more than anything. If I absolutely had to live in a cornerstone city the way Atlanta is that cornerstone for the South, I do think it’s better than the rest. Part of that may be my experience knowing how to escape the bad parts in favor of the good parts because I’m from the area and know it very well.
It’s a much greener city than most others though. There’s more parks and trees. Like I said, just much more spread out.
I’m personally moving near Knoxville soon though and I’d much rather live near a city of that size than Atlanta these days. Admittedly I’m still trying to find that perfect balance where I’m not out in the middle of nowhere but not directly in a large city with tons of people. I’m excited for Knoxville. When I went to Auburn I loved it so the college atmosphere won’t bother me and I’m hoping that since it’s more of city than Auburn I’ll get the benefits without going overboard like Atlanta.
We’ll see
One last thing to add on Atlanta is that there’s construction going on everywhere for like the last 10 years. As if traffic wasn’t bad enough, plan to have that layered on to piss you off even more. Especially around the 400/285 connector. It’s a nightmare

North Carolina at this stage in my life (mid 20s) because it’s booming like crazy. There’s a plethora of good paying jobs, new housing popping up like weeds, insane business investment, fun people to meet, hot sloots, relatively cheap, albeit decreasingly so. It will crash and burn.

Raleigh is probably the best spot left in NC if I had to go there.
If we include SC in this conversation though I’d pick Charleston as the best location in the Carolinas currently.

Alpharetta is a nice burb of ATL, but the traffic and crime is bad. Stayed in Alpharetta for a bit and drove in ATL. Would not want to do that long term.
