Minimalism and being tired of chasing the "American Dream"





What's your thoughts on the "grind" for constantly wanting and striving to attain more. You need that nice car, that nice house, retire early or even when you're 60+...

Is the American dream for you? Or are you struggling to juggle between this and what you actually wanna do which is live minimalist, or to just live "regular"

I don't think minimalism necessary means you eschew the American dream, but instead that the American dream isn't what we're sold today. It used to be a 1200 sqft house, 2 kids, a car, and enough money left over to enjoy hobbies an save some for retirement. In short just a well maintained roof over your head, a family, and a tool to travel, then just some money to spend enjoying life.

The new American dream is a 3000 sqft mini mansion with a 2 car garage and the little garage next to it for your zero turn lawnmower, 3 cars for some reason, a 70 inch TV in each room, smart lightbulbs that cost $80 each everywhere, new $1000 cell phones every year for your family of 3 as well as the $300/month phone plan, subscription services for everything costing another $300/month, just to name a little bit of what people 'want' nowadays.

The issue is what makes you happy is the having enough money left over to enjoy hobbies/life and having a family that loves you, and hopefully having enough money for some semblance of financial freedom. Its a lot easier to achieve that in scenario 1 than in scenario 2, and having a bigger house, 2 more cars and a bunch of digital distractions will not only not make you happier but will drain your resources and eliminate the ability to gain financial freedom. In today's world those that want the actual American dream are considered minimalists because they don't want all that other ****.

The American dream for me is just home ownership, and having modest means. However these days a lot of politicians make efforts to curtail home ownership. My state isn't really pushing for new housing developments, especially with all the Cali trash crossing the state border

When Ahnold was a kid, he saw a Steve Reeves movie in his local cinema. So him being a Bodybuilder in Hollywood became his American dream.

Lots of people see these internet influencers so this becomes the American Dream for them.

When I was in Korea, I saw Americans compete in Muay Thai while they were English teachers during the day. This was the American dream for them.

Same thing in Japan, met a bunch of Nomadic English teachers over there.

Seriously a lot of American College students were out traveling the world.

There is a hedonic treadmill we're all on and it could hurt is in the end chasing things.

Capitalism is fueled by consumerism.

With that said I think the "American Dream" right now can be whatever you want and see fit. That's the beauty of the choice we all fought for in our society.

I will say for me while I'm young I want to focus on providing the right future for myself and my loved ones. That may encompass me working hard and grinding for some time. For some people it's not sustainable or healthy. For other's they strive in high pressure environments.

You really have to be truthful in yourself and also if what you want corresponds to the amount of time/effort you are willing to put into it.

I followed Tim Ward nearly 10yrs ago when he was vlogging his daily life as an oil field tradie in South Dakota. He worked his ass off, at the expense of his health unfortunately, and eventually quit the grind and went back to the Midwest to recover. Interesting to see that he's now promoting the minimalist lifestyle although he looks much happier and healthier. We were on the same path -- I grinded for almost 20yrs (much different career) and thankfully achieved what I sought out for but then realized in the end I'm happier just taking the week off and going camping with my nieces and nephew. I'm a firm believer in less material possessions, more life experiences. Owning too much crap leaves you overly stressed and my family medical history doesn't jive too well with stress so nowadays I try not to purchase anything unless absolutely necessary.

In theory a life of minimalism without any real work or responsibility sounds nice. (It really does). But its not necessarily a luxury all of us can afford. I stayed unmarried and unattached my entire 20s. Just grinding, focusing on myself, building my net worth, no responsibilities. Etc.


My 30s hit me like a train when a couple of older family members that I genuinely love/care about began needing some financial assistance. I've always been the guy without a wife/kids to depend on me. Relatively free and unencumbered. But now the pressure is on to be able to provide. To be an actual leader/patriarch. Etc.


At a certain point I realized true freedom is through excess, not minimalism. To be so successful and so wealthy and so successful financial concerns no longer exist.


The real way is maintaining a minimal life-style while you acquire assets, build investment's, and develop multiple income sources.


Bumming around slightly better then a homeless guy with no plan or security for the future only works if you don't give a F about anyone and only have to worry about yourself.

Just lol at caring about the American dream and not the human dream.

This country did not give birth to you and it will not die with you and it will not be at your funeral nor will it celebrate a single life event with you.

Your life is your own and when you die you will die alone(ultimately) and all that will matter is your experiences and those peoples life you effect

it's been a very very good thing that it's gone mainstream, but i think by nature pretty much everything that can be said about it already has... outside of people with vlogs who have enough charisma to really talk about anything in an interesting way, it blows my mind that there are still people making minimalism videos...

i've seen a few of that dude's videos, and i think he's one of the good ones... seems just like a regular dude who doesn't take himself too seriously but also knows that living his kind of lifestyle is a serious topic for his viewers

also for like 90% of the people who actually call themselves minimalist, i think they are really only drawn to the aesthetics and having the elitist feeling of having s-tier possessions... these *******s will talk your ear off all day about how good their espresso setup is and is totally worth it because they love coffee and how much value it brings to their life, but it's really just another form of materialism

American dream was hijacked by people trying to make profit by driving consumerism to the point of overload. Here is an example, the idea of saving 2.5mo salary for an engagement ring.. LOL fuk that. Now everyone has a McMansion. I don't know how to say it, but people do what they think they are supposed to be doing, what impresses their friends, trying to aquire status, not really sure how to put t instead of analyzing what really they want and what makes them really happy. Listen on the Misc where people will say even 100K a year is poverty and if you can't make at least that you should just give up. WTF is that? People touting their own degrees and other accomplishments trying to put others down. Why I don't really care for most people. Oh, and if you do have anything nice they try to act like you just lucked out or something, cheated, or something. I fell for it for a while too and as I got older I started seeing some things. Figuring what makes me happy and what doesn't. What cost me more time and effort than it's worth. To me, I don't value based on the actual dollar amount but what I did to earn what I bought and if something else could make me happier. Example would be how I got a new truck, cost a lot of money, but honestly after a while it kind of wore off it's novelty. Took advantage of this car market and sold it for what I bought it for, back to driving my old 2002 truck I've been driving since 2004 and couldn't be happier with it. I love that old truck, we have been through so much together, I litterally love that truck, so why buy something new because some idiot that means nothing to me would find it nice, or maybe be iimpressed, or whatever. Put me down for driving an old beat up chevy then I know everything I need to know about you.
