Is Keto BS or worth a try?

Say short term 3-4 weeks. Is this diet worth giving a run for a bit or is it hype for couch potatoes? Interested to hear input from miscers who actually lift. I love carbs and they are the most critical macro for your hormones, so it wouldn’t be anything I’d do more than temporary. I don’t even know if realistic to try with my lifestyle.

Yeah I know there’s a Keto section but that’s dead AF

best diet is the one you can stick to the easiest.
Lifts:
Squat: 460x1
Bench: 400x1
Deadlift: 575x1
OHP: 250x2
Weight: 180 lbs.

Don't have heroes; look up to no one. Because as long as someone's leading the way, the best you'll ever be is second.

it works and its fine for anyone to try as long as youre not diabetic. so you have nothing to lose really by trying. first week you will lose a lot of water weight that you will gain back, like 5 pounds. you get used to it pretty quickly. hardest part is eating out or eating around other people because carbs are basically everywhere.

I would recommend it. I've lost weight and kept it off without losing much muscle mass.

It's also good diet in the sense that you see results quickly due to losing water weight the first week or so.

no keto isnt good short term.

Dropping carbs to trace amounts and keeping protein really high is, because it will give your digestion a good reset, if you take a probiotic it will likely get rid of any bad gut bacteria because they wont get fed, and it will dramatically increase your insulin sensitivity

but there is no reason to start ingesting more fats than your body needs to function.

What is trace amounts of carbs? Same as if you were running keto, 25-50 g?

well technically with keto, you could take in up to your normal level of calories and so then they say to take in a ton of fats. he is saying take in more on the protein sides than fats. I mean PSMF is also a ketogenic diet because you would be in ketosis as well. if you taking in minimal carbs then really your ratio of fat and protein is up to you

nah I wouldnt be as hyper focused as if you were on Keto, I wouldnt be worried about being in ketogenesis because that just means you will use consumed fats as energy but if you arent eating a bolus of fats then its not relevant,.

I would just not specifically add carbs to most meals or eat high carb foods and try and keep carbs as low as possible and focus solely on protein and micronutrients

Keto is fine but it's a magic bullet that melts fat and it's not the only method. It's a diet choice and in some cases it makes sense. It's helpful for someone incorporating fasting in their overall training/eating. It's helpful for anyone who can't get around and train hard. It does not make sense for high-level athletes who need explosive power.

You can try it. If you like it, keep it up. Some people can cut calories easier and some people have insulin issues that Keto is very helpful for. Someone who is metabolically stable and strong, they might not get as much out of it.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

The real BS of keto though is this:

"if your body is in a ketogenic state it will preferentially burn bodyfat as energy"

This is 100% false. It will burn dietary fats as energy but it will burn no more preferential fat than carbs if protein is kept the same and activity is kept the same.

Keto is fantastic for short term weight loss, specifically it's great for losing bloat weight because the first couple of weeks you'll experience diarrhea as your body adjusts. This is a good thing because it rids your body of excess, stubborn water weight.

Keep in mind that Keto requires you to restrict carbs AND protein. Consuming too much protein kicks your body out of ketosis. That means you can't eat lean cut meats like chicken, turkey, salmon, etc...

So basically, keto is a fat-only diet, all you'd be eating is salad with heavy dressing like ranch or thousand island, and also cheese... The only keto-friendly meat is ground red beef because it has a high fat content.

So keto diet is basically: salad + fatty dressing + cheese + ground beef.....

You'll lose fat and water rapidly, but it's not a sustainable long term diet.
Everything I post is satire.

If you are in ketogensis and eat 200g fat, your body will preferentially burn that as energy.

If you are not in ketogenisis your body will probably add half of that to stored bodyfat.

So what that means is dont eat more fat than you need if you are not in ketogensis.

The problem is people misinterpret the first part and think it ALSO preferentially will burn bodyfat. But the body does not associate the fat it consumes with the fat stored in the body, thats an idea in your brain, thats not a physiological function of your body. Your body will only burn its fat stores when you are in a calorie deficit or when you are consuming so low of energy(carbs and fats) and eating a bolus of protein.

The reason you eat the bolus of protein is because if you are eating X amount of amino acids, your body will NOT burn muscle to create more amino acids to burn as energy.

Furthermore, if you are resistance training the body will ALSO not use consumed protein or amino acids in the blood stream for energy and it will turn to stored bodyfat and glycogen to create blood glucose to burn off as energy.

Its actually a lot simpler if you dont want to look too far into it but :

your body needs protein for muscle so eat that

beyond that your body needs energy, you can pick if you like fats or carbs more. Eat whatever you need for energy from that one, and only eat the amount of the other one needed to be healthy and function optimally.

There is no magic to either of them, however, carbohydrates will add to more MPS and anabolism than fat, so if you are more concerned with muscle gain, Keto is not the way to go.

The benefits of it are real. Definitely worth a try just to experience being in ketosis once in your life. It takes a long time to feel "normal" (at LEAST 6weeks if not 8) on it and your overall strength will take a hit.

I’m already fit (not your level but typically in better shape than 99% of people I cross paths with considering Americans are slobs), so I’m just looking at changing things up for a bit. The idea of bombarding my gut with fats kind of concerns me, but also interested to see what being in a ketogenic state feels like.

Trying something new Monday, guess I have time to decide

My caloric intake was about 1.5k higher on a carnivore style keto diet compared to regular western. That was fun. Eating 4-5k cals every day not gaining weight.

It’s not bs you can lose weight with it but at the end of the day it’s calories in vs out. You will lose the same amount of weight doing Keto vs regular dieting with a 500 calorie surplus.

The "feel" people describe in a ketogenic diet is nothing more than having stabilized healthy low blood sugar and insulin sensitivity.

Insulin sensitivity can be controlled without having to drop all carbs and add in tons of fat. Its really a silly concept by people who dont really understand how nutrition works.

this is exactly the idea I am trying to get people to remove from their head. The reason you are "mobilizing(oxidizing) "stubborn"(what does that even mean?) bodyfat" is because you are continuing a calorie defecit and regulated blood sugar. Has nothing to do with being in ketosis.

keto is nothing special, if you can stick to you, and helps you achieve a caloric deficit in the easiest manner possible, then by all means go for it.

My experience was that keto/low carb is good if you're always hungry while in a calorie deficit. I did it for 3 months, dropped 30lb and was never hungry. It's a tool in the toolbox. Keto breath is horrible, though.

I noticed I can consume about 200-300 calories more on keto when cutting, because of the thermogenic response to digesting protein. (Ded fkn Srs)

Well, glucose/glycogen is the EASIEST for your body to use for energy but ketone bodies is the PREFERRED energy source. Its more efficient BUT it results in less oxygen produced int he mitochondria, which is one reason why you tend to drag ass so much in the gym (at first). Another reason is when you get rid of the carboHYDRATES, you shed water and therefore, you dont get anywhere near as much of a pump in the gym. But you can sort of offset this part with creatine and pump agents like arginine, nitric oxide etc.

If you have basic inflammatory issues such as arthritis (like i have) your joints will thank you for doing keto. Within a week of hitting ketosis, my low back felt MUCH better. I dropped 40 lbs in 3 months (with aggressive lifting) in 2019 on keto. Had some eczema like skin patches clear up also. Ive read that some people have minor vision problems and skin tags reverse also.

There is an MD on youtube that is all about keto that covers the diet very in depth. Dr Ken Berry. KenDBerryMD is his channel name i believe
