Vasily Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) will be helping defend his native Ukraine from the Russian invasion of his country. The former three-division world champion Lomachenko has joined the Belgorod-Dnestrovsky Territorial Defense Battalion in Ukraine.

Lomachenko posted a ******** photo of him wearing camouflage fatigues with a rifle slung over his shoulder last weekend.

It’s unclear at this point how much combat duty the 34-year-old Lomachenko will perform because he’s currently juggling a well-paying career as a professional boxer.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist Lomachenko and his promoters at Top Rank are negotiating a deal to challenge four-belt lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. for his straps on June 5th in a large stadium fight in Melbourne, Australia.

According to ESPN, Lomachenko has already agreed to the deal to face the 28-year-old Kambosos for “them beautiful belts” on June 4th. The fight will be shown on ESPN.

If Lomachenko is tied up with his soldiering duties in Ukraine in defending against the Russian invasion, it will open the door for WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney to face Kambosos Jr for the undisputed 135-lb championship.

That is not true according to social media. They seem to be indicating that all of Ukraine hates Putin and Russia, every pretty girl is armed and sniping Russians, and the Ghost of Kiev, excuse me, Kyiv, is killing everything Russian in the skies above Ukraine.

there are areas that are pro-russia and many with strong ties to russia, yes - but it's mostly the older generation. I used to travel to Ukraine frequently (once every couple of months for a week or so at a time for several years), I spent a lot of time in kharkiv specifically and the news today with what's going on there has me all fk'd up.

kharkiv has a lot of russian ties but the young crowd there isn't pro-russia at all. In fact many times i was visited there were protests in the streets and majority of the people protesting were "pro russia" - but they were either locals being paid by russia per day to be there, or came in from other cities.

edit: and it's pretty hard to imagine any russian support continuing the way this has gone

Not true at all. The conflict that has been going on since 2014 has caused a surge in Ukrainian nationalism. Very few predominately Russian speakers support Russia in this misadventure.
