No, The only things that are combined then divided equally are marital assets and debt. Anything that was acquired before the marriage is a non-martial asset.

I mean, not really unless everything is paid off. Anything paid for and off during the marriage is considered martial property, so if you were buying a house before the marriage but paid it off or paid a significant portion during the marriage your spouse would be entitled to a percentage. Sometimes a “commingled” non-marital asset becomes a martial asset, so it’s important to keep established bank accounts out of the marriage equation

There are worksheets and calculators available online for this.

Also this varies state to state.

question, why not just not get divorced?
like...just don't.

what happens if a married man just buys a house elsewhere and just ignores his wife?

My ex-wife cheated, we never went to court, and i made out ahead even though I tried to make it even.

I offered her the car for my pension, but she said she didn't want either. Then I said if the house sells i'll give her half the profits, but if it doesn't sell then how much would she want. She said she only wanted $10k, so I went to the bank for a loan and got that signed off in writing ASAP.

In the agreement i put 50/50 custody on the kids, but I ended up having them like 95% of the time, so I put a stipulation that I was the primary. I also told her that we could change that, if she got a stable job and a place of her own.

In the end I really didn't lose anything. She came and grabbed some items from the house and took some furniture. All worked out, because I think we were both level headed and not very vindictive types.

My kids live with me 100% of the time. My ex-wife pretty much bailed. They were 9 and 7, now 16 and 14

Wife makes marginally more than I do, so I figure I’m fairly insulated from that nightmare. In terms of assets, most of our very significant ones are inheritances, and they about even out in worth. We have disabled immediate family members on both sides as well, and the financial liability of that is pretty even too. We are both believers in a value system where we take care of the old and disabled in our immediate family.

The point is, this issue is worse for people who marry others with disparate incomes and net worth. Not the most romantic thing to consider in a life partner, but worth considering imo. Most divorces cite finances as a major contributing factor.

Isn't that just a polite way of saying you're broke to begin with?

I wasn’t ****ed by divorce.

I ****ed myself with my own conscious decisions and behaviors which resulted in divorce.

There is a difference. It matters.

You gonna blame a female for having control over your behavior?

Be mad that I pointed that out.
