Should be able to get a custom fitted suit for around or under $300. You've gotta take like 18 measurements of yourself and put it in (much easier to get somebody to help you) but I've used them 2x (a couple buddies used them for their groomsman) and they nailed it both times.....definitely a cheap suit, but they fit great.

To get the formal look of a suit without actually wearing a suit -- try sports jackets (with a dress shirt, dress pants, and dress shoes). You can get a lot of affordable sports jackets at Jos A. Bank

I recently watched the movie RainMan. The main character in the film kept saying he bought his suits at K-mart. Surprised me. I didn't know K Mart sold suits.

I haven't worn a proper suit for 30 years. I have sport jackets and odd trousers to handle the times when I want to dress up. I too have been loosing weight and so I look for separates that fit reasonably well and have extra material in the areas that will be tailored. Then I take them to a great tailor to make them fit me. I've even purchased jackets on Ebay (usually higher quality ones) and have them altered.
