Why shouldnt we have gulags?

For criminals and generally unproductive people that are just leeches on society (homeless drug addicts). Why shouldnt we force these people to work?

Yea i know ethical blah blah, but any logical reason?

California apparently has a huge issue with homeless and not enough people to do random work like picking lemon or whatever... there you go, 2 birds 1 stone.

Because we as a society are not benign enough to make the determination as to who belongs there

History has shown time and again that it would evolve from criminals to anyone that the current power disagrees with.

And before you say "but leftists" please note that the current "for profit" prison systems operate basically the same as a gulag, just better weather and more food.

You don't know what you're saying if you think we should have gulags srs.

You don't really have any idea what they were like.

I'm assuming what you mean is take away the frills of modern prisons... take away the tv's, phones, ramen noodles and honey buns, etc. And make them do something.

But that's not a gulag. I read the Gulag Archipelago back 5-6 years ago and the things described in that book are unbelievably savage and not something we want to condone srs. Real actual torture (not waterboarding torture) like stomping prisoners testicles flat, long term sleep deprivation until they were insane, etc. Too much to remember/list but the testicle thing I'll never forget.

Ya i mean gulag as a broadterm for ‘work camp’ not stalinist death prisons.
