You know BJJ looks like it would be a fun hobby

and a good skill to have in your back pocket

but

the two big drawbacks keeping me from going are

the chance of a freak injury:

shoulder snapped up
bicep tear
knee tear
fingers popped
eye gouged

and not even saying you run into some maniac that likes hurting people (we know these type exist in all walks of life)
but just by the accident of two mafukas rolling on each other, it COULD just happen.

2nd:
staph.
people gross azz skin and foot fungus all over mats

If you follow MMA you've heard the horror stories of people catching staph
it's no joke

Are these legit fears or just over blown paranoia?

Staph is a very real concern with any type of grappling. I've had caught it before and it sucks. If you're scared of getting hurt just tap. BJJ has a different vibe than most other grappling sports and attracts pot smokers and introspective types so not many crazy folks just trying to hurt people. If you want a more intense experience do Judo and if your a really crazy mother fukr try wrestling

BJJ is a great way to get injured IME. I trained at a legit fighting gym though so maybe that's why.

It was the most fun spot I've ever participated in though.

You can wear head gear. Getting hit in the balls was worse IMO. And a cup was just not comfortable to wear when rolling either.

I thought about it and went to boxing instead plus the BJJ place near me schedule is shet for me and wouldn't be worth the money. Plus I wrestled before and grappling is much harder on the body.

most injuries are from uncoordinated noobs or people sparring with someone significantly larger than them

ribs, neck, back, knees, elbow, shoulder most common injuries

getting poked in the eye is common too

The injuries are more frequent than the gym

I did it for a few years and quit. It was a lot of fun at first but I eventually got bored of it. I'm sure if I got in a fight I would remember most of it, it's like riding a bike, you never forget.

The key to avoiding injuries is to not roll at 100%, and to use your technique and not speed or strength. I never got injured, but I did get kneed in the balls a twice, both times by females. I also preferred to roll with older guys as opposed to young guys who tend to go hard and use brute force and speed rather than technique.

I've done boxing and BJJ for many years and it's practical for fighting.

I think boxing is enough to fight, BJJ is about choking and breaking ligaments, to the point that your opponent submits out of pain.

It is also competitive like boxing, it is kinda like a chess game because you need to know the right move to put your opponent in submission.

These days I just do boxing but have been boxing for a long time.

This is pretty spot on. BJJ is the thinking man's grappling sport. Staph and ring worm are definitely something you can pick up for sure. You can control some of that by the type of gym you choose to go to but not completely. Do freak accidents occur? Yes.....as in with any contact sport.

Aside from the obvious fitness and grappling capability you gain, the biggest benefit for me has been the mental aspect of it.

Something about rolling around a mat with a sweaty man turns me away from it.

This is how I feel too. I respect those that master in this, but rolling around with another dude sweating all over me isn't appealing at all.

Only thing stopping me is a chronic, tight, painful lower back. I can't move that dynamic, something like boxing where you're more upright is better.

It’s fun

Anything combative is prone to injury. Even if you mitigate for certain factors.

They compliment each other well. A good HS or collegiate wrestler will advance through the belts quicker than the avg Joe due to high work ethic, a willingness to engage and understanding of body mechanics.

I have also seen (my own nephew included) kids who were good at bjj become great at HS wrestling with no prior experience.

Is it just as hard on the body? I kinda do and kinda don't miss the grind of wrestling.

My kids wrestled and did BJJ. They now only do BJJ, wrestling was to supplement their BJJ top game. I would say wrestling is more of a grind. Some fricken tough dudes on those matts. BJJ is less agression more technique/mental. I dont believe you have to be a great athlete to be good at BJJ. i think you need to be athletic to be good at wrestling.

100% understood.....theres something for everyone. I love mountain biking as well. Whether its on trails or on a lift access down hill. Im more of a social character so its more fun for me to cruise with my buddies or my boys. Kind of like cruising down fresh powder on a snowboard. More for for me with a pack of friends or family.

The reason why I think BJJ is great for me mentality.......there are very few places that push me to in my mind to a place where I mentally "quit". BJJ matts are one of them. Im getting better but I still can visualize those moments in a fight when my mind gives up. Pisses me off but keeps me coming back for more.

It is only as hard as you make it to be. When I focused on competing I was constantly banged up from the grind of training 1-2x per day plus conditioning and dieting.
Now I show up, train, talk chit with my friends and go about 70% max and aside from a muscle strain I have not been injured in years. I don't drink, don't play poker and it is still too cold to play golf, so this is my male bonding. Try and kill another person often enough, you will become friends for life.

Most new guys get hurt because they don't know when to tap, go too hard, they are exhausted or they are just too tense during training - nervous system gets shot. Busted fingers, busted wrist, pulled abdominal muscle, etc.

BTW I recommend you drop into a gym during nogi night. With your wrestling experience you would probably really enjoy the class.
