Jada resents Will Smith -- she is basically Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate

Jada resents Will Smith -- she is basically Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate
I watched this movie the other day. Fantastic film. A classic.
After seeing this Will Smith-Chris Rock slap incident at the Oscars, it got me thinking about things. Jada -- Will's wife -- obviously has aired a lot of dirty laundry in recent years. The whole 'entanglement' saga was a huge shot to Will's clean image. To emasculate him like that, it makes you think of her intentions.
Why?
I think Jada is an insecure narcissist that resents Will because he is talented, and successful because of it. She despises that she is known more for being his wife than an actor and star in her own right.
But the truth is that she'd have fallen off into obscurity and irrelevance long ago if she wasn't married to Will. Which leads me to my next point: dependence.
Like Mrs. Robinson, Jada is dependent on her husband. For brand relevance and awareness, and also money to live a certain luxurious lifestyle. She feels powerless; and it's the optics that does her ego in.
So, what does she do? She tries to gain some power back by hurting Will, just like Mrs. Robinson did to Mr. Robinson. She sleeps with her son's friend, and then publicly confirms it to emasculate and humiliate him. All her actions are to denigrate him, who she deems the author of her powerless situation. The one that damages her ego.
You can rest assured she is secretly happy that Will humiliated himself on his big night, his Oscar coronation. It also gives her more attention, which is what she craves: her own spotlight.
I also did more research on their relationship, and there are more parallels to The Graduate and Mrs. Robinson. She fell pregnant with Jaden and felt as though she was pressured into marriage, by her mother and Will. She had always wanted a unconventional relationship, but Will wanted the traditional assortment.
Like Mrs. Robinson, she probably is depressed, thinking back to that decision. It symbolized, perhaps, the death of her ambition and dreams.
Or maybe that's a little too far. Maybe they've got an open relationship and she's mad he has been living like a rockstar, ****ing baddies on the regular. Wanted to knock him down a peg.
Who knows.

She notes how difficult it is for people in recent generations to appreciate the experience of a middle-aged woman in the 60s. She also notes the care with which director Mike Nichols and writer Buck Henry crafted the character of Mrs. Robinson through details in the film.
Some points she makes:
- Mrs. Robinson is a predator - she is often dressed in animal prints.
- She is not motherly - she never shares a scene alone with her daughter.
- She is vengeful toward her daughter whom she is jealous of for attending college - she seduces Benjamin in Elaine's bedroom even though she knows Elaine has a crush on Benjamin.
The affair, which is about power more than anything else, hurts her husband, whom she also holds responsible for her powerless situation because of the unplanned pregnancy that caused her to drop out of college.
Her powerlessness is also demonstrated in her financial dependence on her husband, her inability to drive, and the fact that the only name by which she is referred is her husband's name.
"The particular social order that produces The Graduate's Mrs. Robinson is specific to the 1960s." This bored, bitter woman was pre-sexual revolution, pre-birth control, pre-abortion, pre-women in the workforce after marriage, pre- no fault divorce. Mrs. Robinson was a woman with no choices, no outlets except this affair. It was a passionless affair of which Benjamin says they "might as well have been shaking hands."
It was an attempt to have power over one corner of her life, a power she wielded over Benjamin, and in order to maintain that power, she naturally could not allow Benjamin to date her daughter.

Interesting take on Mrs. Robinson, I always found her character interesting somehow but never did a deep dive.
