Fishing boat advice. Help me brahs

Basic stuff for a lake. Calm water and stocked with trout. Basically the handicapped lane in bowling alleys, applied to fishing. Yeah, I get it, we won’t miss a pin.

Took my 7 year old out for the first time to catch something real in a random lake. He caught “seaweed”, and was damn proud of it.



We are going to the stocked lake next, so we actually catch something. Any suggestions on how to get a decent boat that won’t break the bank? I was going to get one from Dicks for around $700. Worth getting something better?

Depends on the size of lake and how much wind the lake gets. In most situations a basic set up will catch just as many fish as a $100k fishing boat with a competent fisherman... The lakes I fish can have some pretty extreme weather changes and the wind can go from 5-70mph within minutes and get some big rolling waves. In that case I wouldn't recommend anything less than an 18ft deep v boat. But that's more of a safety issue than "needed" to catch fish.

A little johnboat with electric trolling motor and affordable depth finder might fit your needs. Or even less than that. I've caught good fish from a kayak.

get a kastmaster spoon or inline spinner and light weight spinning rod. occasionally twitch the rod tip and vary speed

Yeah that works too. I've done a lot of fishing from just a canoe or kayak. I prefer fishing out of kayaks because they are more mobile but small row boats work great too. Just seem to be more work to get it moving

Eh it helps having a boat but $100k+ rangers certainly aren't necessary. I fish a basic 18ft 1970s lund and used the money I saved to invest into top electronics. Gps trolling motor, 4 stroke Honda outboard, and Garmin livescope imaging. None of that is necessary to catch fish but it certainly helps. When I'm walleye fishing I don't even put a hook in the water until I find a school of walleyes on my livescope lol.

Flat skiff bottom boat?

My dad was an idiot and bought a carolina skiff to joy ride in the intracoastal waters (bumpy as fuk). One of my 3rd or 4th dates with old GF was taking her out on the boat. That was fukin horrible. Boom! Boom! Boom!

No walleye in my area. carp and overfishing killed them all

soon across the US they will go extinct along with pike, small mouth, pickerel etc.

Up North it looks like? Well any motorized boat will begin at a few thousand so not sure what you mean.

An aluminum deep V hull w/ say 40-50hp motor is really all you need. Keeps you from getting wet if it’s cold out.

Anything less would be John boat ish which is like a 15hp motor and aluminum boat which handles calm fine but will rock if you don’t mind your steps but suitable for small calm stuff. Those might be 1-2k.

I hooked them up to sink about 6 inches with those metal balls. A brah I talked to at this bar who apparently fished for decades said bologna deli meat works just as well. He was old and drunk though, so not sure if srs.

Feelsgoodman. What inspired me to do it was that my son kept showing me fish he caught in some game on Nintendo switch. Rustled me that he was naming fish without ever being out there and seeing them in the real world. Or understanding how much work it really takes to catch one. This is really an effort from me to pull him away from the screen, to see what he is missing in real life.

He caught nothing, but his big lesson today was that casting a line right is harder than aiming a control pad and pressing a button. That's enough for me.

I don't like using bait

have gotten very good with artificial lures, jigs, spinners, and spoons

I grew up near a private lake 1/2 mile from my house and bought my own boat at age 12. A little 9' random boat off Craigslist back in the day for $500 with anchors, electric motor, oars all included. I fished the fukk outta that thing growing up. Only good for two people though but it was a blast. Still have it stored at the same lake till this day.

I see guys out on the lake trolling in those little plastic sundolphin 2 man boats all the time. You can stay under $1k with the boat, trolling motor and fishfinder. Another option could be finding a used tandem sot paddle kayak for $300ish but it's going to be a wetter experience than a boat.

Op look up Porta bote

It’s a little fiberglass boat Can fold up and can be mounted to hold on your car roof

I had one before and was flying with a small 5hp outboard because it’s so light. If I ever by again I will buy that, it was faster and easier to transfer than the inflatable with a steel floor and 20hp outboard

Problem with the sun dolphin is a pain to move it and you have way less space for extra sheit

I just got my boy who is turning 8 his own little kayak and figure I can tie a long line on it and chill at the dock while he sorts it out.

I always get worried about logistics of getting too big of a boat down off my truck since my wife is only 98lbs and the 7 year old is my oldest.

He’s been into fishing really hard since he was 5. It’s a great hobby. I like traveling to all the different lakes to see what the dock setups are like and some of them have great setups for fishing off dock. The fish enjoy the shade so it’s normally a good place to find them too.

Don’t let them keep the little guys tho idk what that mongoloid up there is doing murdering those little dudes instead of letting them grow into a proper prize.

its better to know someone with a boat rather to own a boat


if you are freshwater lake fishing... john boat / canoe...something stable enough to stand up in

Also if you are up for it I’ve seen some really cool designs with seeing cheap inflatable (still expensive ones like 800-1k). And you add in wood flooring and swivel chairs and a motor mount yourself.

Seems to be a pretty sweet cost effective setup
