Misc one month away from graduating with CS degree need life advice!!!

Finally after 6.5 years I am one month away. I am very close to landing two jobs, one is a more software development role with a base salary of between 65-70k and a 6-8 % bonus, final interview this Wednesday praying to God I don’t screw it up. The other is 65k base salary more like a tech support for the core product of the company since their dev team is in Europe. I was crunching the numbers the other day and holy crap I didn’t realize how ****ty these salaries are in terms of current cost of living. I’m 26 now and need to start living on my own but my dads basement is looking a whole lot better after crunching these numbers. My GF will probably be pissed if I don’t live on my own after waiting for so long for me which I understand but I have to also think of myself here. My ultimate goal is to buy a house ASAP. Would you live in your dads basement until 30 lol? I’m thinking I should just live on my own and save up for 5 years but I am extremely worried about this housing market as it keeps going up fast..

Is 65k enough to survive?

I think you can 1) negotiate for a higher salary 2) look after yourself first.

median household income in the USA is about 50 to 70 depending on where you live, and that's often two incomes

that's enough to afford a home and raise some kids comfortably on a single income if you're responsible with your money

if you want those big bucks though you gotta do stuff like scala, big data, machine learning, and hard-even-for-programmers kinda stuff

plenty of people pulling 200+ and 300+ as CS grads out in Silicon Valley, cost of living is brutal out there though, so it balances out unless you are remote in a cheaper place

You need to practice your interviewing skills (leetcode, start with Blind 75 or Sean Prashad curated list) and get a better job ASAP dude. You can get $100k+ remote for a new grad at bigger companies, closer to $200k for the well known companies.

From what I understand with many SWE, you take the job and work it for 1 year, 2 years max. Then many doors will open up to you and you can increase your salary like a madman. Some SWEs hop from 3-4 different companies in a 5-year span and they double or triple their salary.

Miscers need to stop putting OP down. First job out of school. Of course the pay isn't worth it. He will be entry level basically a trainee.

OP stop worry about what other people think or these set metrics where you are supposed to be. Just take the job that you can learn and grow the most and keep on hustlin.

You need to leetcode and study the system design primer OP. Maybe you can get into Amazon and suffer a couple years.

Or you can go the C++ route and make bank in trading.

but if you can study for a month and be a trainee making 50-150% more and learn and all that, why wouldn't you want to do that lol.

With a bachelors in electrical engineering in 2018, I was offered $75k in Dallas at a notoriously low-paying tech company. And that was $5T USDs ago.

This. Work your ass off and be a "star employee" then take opportunities that come or put that sht on your resume while looking for a company that will pay 20k+ more at least

6.5 years for that. It's not bad but that is a hell of a time investment, plenty pay more with HS/GED. But as to the question, living alone is great, owning a house is nice, do whatever you want with it and live how you want. Does suck when it comes to cost, basic maintenance, sudden repairs, extra responsibilities, more bills.

If I could still live with my parents and just invest all the money it'd save me I absolutely would, fck everyone else I'd rather retire early.

I spent my entire senior year doing machine learning courses and it turns out they want masters degree and PhD for most data science positions, so my plan rn is to take a year off since I am so burnt out, spend the winters doing leetcode while I do one of the lower paying jobs, go back for data science masters in fall 2023 and apply to higher paying jobs at the same time, I really enjoy the data science path over software engineer
