What is the state of EDM in the year 2022?

Yeah I know we've got some OG's in here that were enjoying the early stuff from 1998 to 2009, or fell down the house/deep-house/trance rabbit hole. Personally, I didn't really "recognize" the genre until I was at Lollapalooza 2015 and saw Kaskade put on a show. The 2014 to 2016 mainstream crossover years (Avicii, Zedd, Calvin Harris, Martin Garrix, etc doing collabs with pop stars) pretty much shaped how I enjoy and recognize EDM.

But fuark, it legit feels like EDM just fell off the radar completely. Other than the occasional Marshmello collaboration, it doesn't seem like EDM is in the spotlight at all anymore. Did Avicii's death and the covid lockdown signal the end or am I missing something?

If there's chit we should be listening to or you recommend FROM THE PAST YEAR, then post it up in this thread. It'd suck if EDM just ended up being remembered as the mid-2010's version of disco.

EDM is still recovering from the lockdowns. This Summer is the first real decent music being released since like 2019, and still I'd guess it will be next year before the scene really gets going again.

Ultra seemed pretty good this year though. I've been listening to sets while working out, and it seemed as good as ever. Just need to get people back into it.

A lot of artists of all genres from rock to rap rely on live shows. Live shows are a big chunk of income.

So when the pandemic happend a lot of income was lost.

I've been relying on synthwave and similar genres. Dance with the dead, Carpenter brut and others have been cranking out good chit.

The "pandemic theory" doesn't entirely hold up for me. Avicii released "Wake Me Up" in June 2013, and Calvin Harris released "Summer" in March 2014. I feel like those two kicked off a popularity wave for the genre that lasted just a short period of time. Like by 2017 it was for the most part already back on the fringes and a tiny sub-genre again. Like what was the last EDM song that even achieved mainstream popularity? Closer by Chainsmokers came out in June 2016 - that's seriously it as best I can tell.

Fuark, I even asked in this thread if anyone can aware me of quality EDM tracks from the past 12 months. So far, crickets.

Exactly. EDM is made for festivals. I'm sure they were still making music during lockdowns, but it just wasn't being released.

Yeah, I don't listen to much Tiesto anymore, but he stays relevant. His set at Ultra was actually really good this year.

Recovering from lockdowns still. SMF, Ultra, etc are just getting back spun up. Lotta places still have stupid restrictions in place.

EDM as a whole (to include my more favorable sub-genres) just doesn't do well in physical sales and streams are pennies so no real reason to do big releases during the lockdowns. The real money is from touring and using new music to hype upcoming shows and collabs.

I haven't been to a festival since 2016 so not affecting me much, but I still pay attention.

Yeah bro that's just how pop culture goes

The rock scene is still around, used to be the number one pop music, same with jazz

Hip hop is big now but eventually it's gonna go by the wayside and people will be on something else

Hip hop is not gonna go away either, it will probably get into some really cool stuff once it's not the center of pop music

it's just that pop culture is kinda like fashion or similar things, like carpet flooring vs wood panel

It still leaves a mark on the next big thing and you can hear the influences over the years

I'd say the peak was around 2012-2015. I doubt it'll reach that again as far as mainstream EDM. I've always been into the sub genres of trance, progressive house/deep house, and some deeper techno. It all keeps evolving and I think the sub genres are better than ever. A lot of new producers out there making a lot of new music.

A lot of the festivals that I once attended appear to be in full swing from the notifications I've received. I don't know if I'll attend any other than an Anjunadeep Open Air or Rufus at Red Rocks this year. I'm not into shows at all compared to what I used to be. The international shows are so much better than the US degen class that it seems to attract. So I'm missing those more than anything.
