If your car was stolen

and recovered a couple weeks later, would you still drive it? Or would you just call it a loss, sell it, buy something else?

Is there a time limit to how long the car would have to be out of your possession that decides if you sell or keep?

I would feelz violated. But I've owed my Lexus for 10 years now and know it from head to toe if it was ever tampered with.

Well assuming it passed an inspection, it wouldn't bother you how they drove it? What if the car was recovered with way too many miles for the period it was stolen?

I'd probably just buy a new car if I am going to have to wait a few weeks.

Why would I want to drive a car that has been abused with weeks worth of another mans farts in the seats when I have a perfectly new and probably better car?

Cars are financial liabilities. If there is nothing wrong with it, I am not going to spend money on another one. Regardless of miles, seat farts, whatever.

In 2022 there are four types of car thefts.

1. You let someone drive off in your car and they refuse to return it.
2. You leave your keys in your car and doors unlocked and some rando gets lucky.
3. You drive a piece of crap that can be started with a flat-head screw-driver.
4. You have an high end car (100K+) and the thieves target your vehicle with a forged/fake digital key fob that is capable of cranking the vehicle.

First and second are most common. Three is getting rarer these days. Four only happens at dealerships. Typically with a brand new vehicle that has 100-500 miles on it and was bought at auction/traded in.


I have a garage and don't lend anyone my keys so chances of my vehicle getting 'stolen' is slim to none.

This. I'm on good terms with my agent so my vehicle gets stolen I'm getting another one ASAP. I really don't see how anyone would steal my truck though.

now dont quote me on this, but apparently they have signal repeaters that amplify the key phob signal, so if you hang your keys by your back door like 99% of people, they can just start your car in your driveway and just drive off.

i keep my all cars fluids in tip top shape, so even if they dogged it for a week everything would still be fine. would def take it to a suspension shop and have em look closely to make sure they didnt **** up the underbody/suspension. cars are NEVER the same after hitting curbs and bending stuff under there, even after repairs are done.

this I can get behind. I bought my current car used and I have a hard time coping with some of the flaws. She's been defiled by another, ngl.

The company will normally make payment within 2 weeks to 30 days at the most. They figure if the vehicle isn't recovered within a few days, it's probably gone.

I used to work in the industry and now mom is leaving this thread.

I've never seen that but anything is possible. That's pretty high tech for a car thief to do to just 'joy-ride' in your car. When its a cloned key-fob on a high end car the tracking system is deactivated and those cars are completely ghost. Either chopped and sold on the secondary market or shipped to Mexico. Since this thread is about recovering your car chances of a really high tech car thief targeting you, and you getting your car back is extremely unlikely.
