Anyone here on salary that still has to log their hours?

I swear this is the most annoying chit. We have to itemize our hours for customer transparency and I swear to god its just a mechanism to keep critical thinking and schedule planning out of the loop. It gets to a point where a normal day revolves around a different charging bucket every hour.

I need a career that doesn't revolve around micromanaging myself. Is it like this everywhere or what? I work as an engineer, and I swear its management's goal to turn my day into 75% self reporting. Managers will straight up send multiple tasks with no charging information, then get mad when you don't charge properly. They're constantly trying to get you to charge someone else's area.

I should point out there's literally more managers than engineers in my dept now. Its fukking crazy. Everyone in leadership has quit over the last year.

We have to keep track of vacation and sick time, but that's fairly easy to manage. I actually run payroll as well.

We do at my job, it helps employees though. There are times when we work like 18 hour days for two weeks straight. Our salary is based on a 40 hour work week. We get to PTO that time outside of those situations.

Must be nice

I got our whole dept together for a meeting where I told the director I refuse to work more than 40 hours per week if the company isn't going to match inflation.

He quit last week. I believe its because he agrees.

I feel very fortunate for sure.

I am glad you expressed yourself, a lot of people would rather just suck it up. It is interesting he quit. With no other information, by itself, that could be concerning.

As a manager I don't. But because most of my team doesn't meet the threshold (like $98k I think) they are hourly but need to be aware of not going over 40 hours a week. Honestly it's good for them, they don't get overtime unless it's approved (and get time and half). I do not get that luxury. Paid for 40 hours no matter how much I work. Their pay rate is based off whatever salary amount they agreed to though.

If your hours are billable to customers then obviously you'd have to keep track of them.

Its extremely concerning. I am looking for another job. All our leadership has quit and they're handing out promotions like candy. We're done for.....because we micromanaged chit that didn't matter and ignored anything that did.

Yeah I worked at a job where we had this exact situation, in order to itemize invoices for customers anyone who worked on a project in any way had to account for 100% of their hours weekly.

Straight up:

0900-1200 Task A
1200-1300 Lunch
1300-1500 Task B

Was the gheyest chit ever. My sympathies OP, it is truly over for you.

I was the controller and acting cfo of a company for 3 years. They made everyone punch in and out.

When I got there there was a cfo, and he told me I didn't have to punch, so I didn't. He left, and the ceo told me to punch, so I punched. Everyone else who ran departments complained. Some refused. Not sure what the big deal was.

It's called billable hours. Mgmt needs to know how many hours to bill your client?

Pretty standard in professional services, I thought.

Check with a manager if you don't know who to bill.

Its just mind boggling to me that there's more managers than workers but they ask use to create the schedules, manage resources, track our hours, and then still ensure the outcome.

like, wtf are the managers doing?

This is just bureaucratic bloat, simple corruption, very common in the public sector

Understaffed, underpaid, several managers micromanaging overworked employees while indulging in the fat of their labor

A successful business has a rock solid balance sheet, focused on real income producing assets, and not wasting money on extra comforts

When these bloated companies fail, predatory PE firms will often swoop in and scoop it up, trim the fat by firing tons of people and selling extra assets, ending extra benefits

This is the dark reality of business, firing people and streamlining operations, making the machine more efficient, is how you turn a failing company around

Once the failing company that had high pressure to sell has been turned into a successful business, they will sell it off and pocket millions

They do this over and over again, making millions every single time, and in the case of companies that rely on real physical work, struggling against unions

Here is the kicker, some companies rely directly on the sweat and blood of physical labor, so there is a struggle between the rich and poor, between seven figure bonuses and the dignity of the working man
Beans. Cleans. Gasoline.

Ahhhh this explains a lot about why you always seem so upset haha

I gauge employees on productivity.....not how many hours they said they worked. In fact, if they claim to have worked XXXX hours and have produced little.....thats not good.
