For sad, serious, historic anime, I recommend “Grave of the Fireflies”. Not for the medium, but for the story, and quality. War related. One of the sadder one’s I’ve seen, and placed
closely to works like Pans Labyrinth in spirit, IMO.

Japanese used to make serious cartoons because they didn't have budgets like a Star Wars movie. So, you can draw it all and saves millions of dollars and still have a great story.

If you view anime as a cost savings technique, it changes the attitude about it.

Death Note is one of the most interesting stories I have ever seen.

The the US hasn't made a real version of this in live action is beyond me.

Basilisk is another all time favorite and it's both weird and a very moving story.

A Japanese guy wrote the story after WWII and it's about WWII perversion.

In the story, there's two ninja clans that both work for the king. All the members of the clans used magic, genetic manipulation, and chemistry to turn themselves into deadly killing machines. They are all basically mutants with their abilities being focused on killing.

The king is tired of them and orders each clan to kill the other. Since they know nothing in life other than killing, they are only too happy to destroy themselves.

The book was written to illustrate how the Japanese in WWII were a war culture and delighting to destroy themselves for no real reason while everyone's lives just slip away with no enjoyment.

It's a great series and the intro to the shows alone is f@cking awesome.

Demon Slayer is gold, can’t wait for the next season

And not going to lie, I’m up to date with everything listed above except Edens Zero. I feel guilty admiring all the fan service/glow in Fairy Tail at my age lol. It’s 10/10 animation lmao.

Watch Saint Seiya Soul of Gold. It's only 13 episodes, and it's great.

So you get a picture of what I talking about in “Fairy Tail”, it’s
Infamous for “fan service”. Aka this stuff pops up in the middle of random episodes:

It’s a really fun anime overall tbh. Lots
more to it than the clip I shared. A hell of a lot, actually.

Code Geass has a similar theme as Death Note, but the story is totally different.

It's about complex nefarious plans.

I never got to watch the end but I liked what I saw.

I’ll throw in Parasyte as another interesting one. It gives narrative to a non-human species on the human condition. Violent and disturbing at times, but worth a watch.

I saw a bit when it was on TV but then got sidetracked. I will have to check it out.

I watched a load of anime movies back in my early 20s; Ninja Scroll, Monster City, Akira, Ghost in a Shell, but just kinda moved away.

I will defo check out what is available on Netflix anime-wise.

Anime is a broad art form, so writing the entire thing off because some of its for kids or because you don't like weebs is low IQ.
"A stupid man's report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand."

Black Lagoon
Your Lie in April
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Jojos bizarre adventure (complete nonsense but fun to watch)
Studio Ghibli films are generally excellent
Legends of the Galactic Heroes
Psycho Pass
One Punch Man (pretty much GOAT)

Macross is on my list

A great part about anime is that they generally have zero compunction about killing what you thought were main characters, unlike western stories
