Just DECLINED a raise....wut do now?

-Got a GREAT yearly review
-Have taken on a CHIT TON of additional work in the last year
-Involved in/with departments I'm not even supposed to be
-Always deliver and get told how well of a job I'm doing
-Got a "cost of living raise" last year of 3%
-Haven't gotten a substantial raise since 2020
-Blah Blah Blah

About 2 weeks ago my Manager told me he wanted to put in for a 24% raise for me, I said, chit that's awesome......just got word from HR that they approved it for 8%....$8,150 more/year.

I declined it stating basically what I said above (in a more corporate way) and also sited that inflation this year is over 8% and told them that their offering was both insulting and unacceptable.

They wont negotiate or come back with something else.

Wut do now......?

take the raise, look for another job

it would be dumb of you to reject it and then you quit cause you're mad and out of a job for who knows who long or short.

I've been here for 3.5 years and make 30k more than when I started.....I also know how much the company is making (due to my position) and know that they're just being cheap.

They told me the average raise this year was 3.5% so, I should have just taken it and been appreciative.

Yeah you gotta quit now brah. Honor compels you. Mirin that you took a stand though, the challenges associated with that are going to be easier than living a life where your company cucks you in such a insulting way.

EDIT: was going to say that you should take it and look elsewhere, but seeing as you already formally declined, just put in a month's notice right now. Everyone in the world is phucking hiring right now, if you can't find a new job in a month, it never even began for you anyway.

Take raise, check out completely and look for something new. Do as little as possible so they realize how much you actually do or did, and dont even give them a match offer once they realize they need you and the market has changed. Use all your sick time and all your vacation and just be happy with more spare time while you transition to something new.

This right here. You don't even have to give them a month - tell your boss you're going to look elsewhere but you'd prefer to work with him on a transition plan out.

Agree with this as well OP, go to your boss and tell him it's over and a plan needs to be put in place. The only reasons I was advocating for a month-long transition plan are to hedge your bets to make sure you find something good and to maintain a reasonably good standing with the company so you can use your line manager/whomever else as a strong reference.

I certainly understand your stance on this, but I do not understand declining a raise..... negotiating sure, but seems they wouldn't do that anyways.

Should have just accepted and started looking elsewhere. 8% is better than 0%.

Your manager either lied or is an idiot. I would never tell an employee how much I put in for their raise without getting it approved first. If he had come with the 8% and said he worked on getting you better than the average 3, you might have been ok with that.

My manager and I have a really good relationship.....he never has to deal with me, I make his life easier...we literally talk once/month when he checks in to see if I need anything. We all work remotely. He had me sign the initial request (to make it seem like I was asking for a raise and he supported it) he put in for 24% so I know he wasn't lying. He sent me a Teams meeting invite for tomorrow to discuss moving forward...he know's I'm pissed and I'm sure he can guess what's next.

He told me he asked for a raise about 2 months ago, they declined his request completely...he went out and got another offer, put in his 2 weeks and they caved and gave him what he asked for which was only 10%. In talking with some of the PM's here, the most that anyone got this year (out of the 5 that I work with) was 3.8%. They capped our Bonuses at 3% this year too.....they used to be capped at 7%

I actually got a call from a previous employer (that I walked away from) this morning looking for a PM...would be a pay cut but I liked that company. I moved for an opportunity to live outside the US, so there were no hard feelings. Might be entertaining that.

HR wont negotiate on a "performance review" raise....but to know the variance between what was asked for and what was approved is what led me to decline it. I also know this company had a record year last year and we are literally getting more work than we can support....hence taking on a chit ton more in the last year.

The REAL downside is there is no way in hell I'm going to find a job where I live that pays what I currently make. Oh well....I'm tired of being run into the ground and thrown peanuts.

This. Assuming your job isn't extremely draining, quitting will only remove your income. Just keep the job to have money coming in and look for another job in the meantime.

Tell us your IQ is more than 1 standard deviation below the mean without telling us your IQ score.

OP you should have accepted and immediately started your job search. You've kinda fuked up now but unless you want to dig into savings for living expenses until you find a new job you should just stay and start looking.

Put in your notice boyo. The company obviously doesn’t value you at all, and will continue to place more on your shoulders while underpaying you.

If you’re as valuable as you say they’ll offer the difference in salary to try to get you to stay, but at this point they’re showing that the money was always there and they were playing you.

Everyone is hiring now, and most substantial raises come from changing companies. It’s an employees market for anyone who’s skilled right now, and if you’ve gotten 30k in raises over the past 3 years then you’re likely one of us.

Speak to your boss and ask if you can get the raise.

Still do a good job but look for another job.

You are not being weak by now accepting an 8k rise.

Plus the rise should help you get more money when you leave.

Quitting now is just dumb. You might end up with a job paying less…and how will you explain why you left? And do you think any new employer will be concerned if you tell them why (here is an unsubtle clue: they will be).

I would be a pro and still do a good job.

Maybe a year or two after you leave they make a higher offer.

Don’t burn bridges. It’s not in your long term interest (imo).
