Tech industry sucks and I suck more fml

-Work hard for 6.5 years on bachelors degree
-Get job interview scheduled
-Do great on initial screening
-Do great on Hackerrank test
-Final interview comes, doing great for the first 35 mins, final question is random programming challenge by someone with a thick accent and I come up with a solution that is not effecient

No job offer

This industry truly sucks idk why I did this to myself LMAO

Thats pretty common. If you're in california the IT/biotech jobs are endless. Its normal to apply to 15-20 jobs everyday in a month and only get an offer for1 interview.

The interviewing process is awful but salaries are high for decent work-life balance vs somewhere like finance.

Very true it is gonna be worth it once you’re in and then when you’re in the recruiters come calling left and right but the initial job search is brutal. The working from home options these days is awesome too can’t complain about that

I work in finance and ppl make crazy money doing not much, they literally control the money

I am at the bottom doing the donkey work with no degree and can easily make the same as a senior programmer

Financial services has always paid the most, that's why people get into it, it also mints more billionaires than anything else

There is an upper limit as a tech worker, but there is literally no limit in finance, people make millions per month and are still considered small beans

The scale of the economy is mind boggling, we have been trained from birth to be good little workers and see doctor/lawyer/tech wizard as the "top"

Yeah those might command the highest salary, but even big salary payments are a drop in the expense bucket for the masters of the economy

This is also kept as a secret, very wealthy ppl like those with hundreds of millions or billions keep all this on the down low

I'm not trying to sell finance as a career, I am just giving a bit of insight from inside the machine, it's ridiculous

The only reason I got in was because I realized it was the most efficient means of using my time as a worker

This way I don't have to spend my life selling my time just to pay bills and take on debts

The people in finance have solved money ages and ages ago and quietly run things

The US govt doesn't bail them out for pity, they literally just walk into DC and demand it from them

What are they gonna do? Close the banks? People can't get their money, can't pay bills, ATMs stop working, total chaos

Look at the Panama Papers as well, Wall Street and global finance is above all governments, he who has the gold makes the rules

But yeah take on huge student loans, make yourself a high value worker, and with a bit of luck you can work off your debts, maybe own a home

What about the lender though? What about them boys on Wall Street? That's where your loan and interest payments are going, but you are the one working til the grave
Beans. Cleans. Gasoline.

If in doubt, brute force - for an inital solution at least.

You basicaly have to study for the test full of bullchit questions. You could be an experienced software engineer who writes super solid, maintainable code and get owned by a grad who writes spaghetti just because they're right out of data structures and algo classes.

What about mechanical or manufacturing engineering jobs? Are they just as hard and have to go through the same bill**** as IT and tech jobs?

Yep. Be experienced and get interviewed by some new grad who asks you some esoteric algorithm you're never going to use on the job. SAD!

my bro is in finance. i know there's money in it, just don't really respect it tbh

money is literally in the vein of psychology in terms of analysis. a huge field of all fluff and no substance

i respect academia and the sciences much, much more

i dont really like people that would sell me for a buck or those that put on a facade and say something different behind my back. that's kind of where i'd put sales; you have to manufacture a need and dress it up

i respect these tech tradies in here more.. but not when they go on about not doing chit and getting lots ^^ same vein as up there

and yes.. its a problem i have with my bro

because they are, an average college grad joining Amazon as an L4/L5 and making 220k+ just for being able to breath and code

Could have been a test to see if you resize that you’ve received ambiguous requirements and how you’d handle that with your customer.

As an IT guy of 25+ years, you arent going to make it if this is your attitude/approach (srs)...

One set back and your attitude is "I dun goofed"? This field is ALL about setbacks and handling failure.

...and lets be real tea. I've conducted thousands of interviews and no SINGLE question ever prevented/eliminated anyone from a position.

So this^^ is "tough love" but you better get your mind right in this field or you really arent going to make it....and I want you to make it because its a great career.

You see, this is the problem with schools today. They coddle a lot of the kids and give them numerous excuses, chances, options etc to pass a class. If kids check out or don't want to bother working, you have to bend over backwards to get them to try or make an effort. If you try to do something realistic or tough love approach, you get blasted by the admin, parents, politicians etc. So then when the kids graduate and go into the real world, they suddenly see that competition matters, handling aggression or conflicts calmly is a vital skills, talking/communicating with people is a vital skills etc.

Ay OP, how did you not get the job when CNBC is reporting that there are 10 million more jobs than unemployed people?

You that bad at what you do?

Edit: We also hear all the time about how tech jobs are always short staffed, because there isn't enough geeks who want to major in STEM degrees.

What's going on with you, bro?
