Repped. The Shining is GOAT. It’s not a slasher but it’s definitely a fukkin horror film.

I grew up loving the Halloween films but Kubrick is another level of disturbing. The Shining is a film you can watch over and over and notice the odd details that are out of place. There is foreboding from beginning to end, even when things seem “normal.” It’s a terrifying film.

It’s just so well done. All psychological. no jump scares, no excessive gore, no common horror tropes.

Stanley Kubrick is the best movie maker to ever do a horror film, and this is the only one he ever did.

Plus jack nicholsons performance is outstanding.

Kubrick said he hinted all through the film that he filmed the moon landing..like the boy's sweater, and a bunch of other random stuff

Both great. Consider Rosemary's Baby too. Perfect movie to throw on if your wife is pregnant.

The Thing and Alien are other excellent horror movies.

Psycho is a classic. Not quite scary in the way other horror movies are, though. More of a psychological horror movie with the exception of a few scenes.
Les Diaboliques is another classic to try.

Exorcist, Shining, the Omen, and other movies pre-CG are so much better if one gets the perfect 4K image out of their head.

Have those movies on a good surround system at night in a quite room. So much white noise and quiet scenes. Now all movies use music too much to foreshadow and the digital audio is too clean sounding. Yes, some effects don't hold up, but at least they had to find a way to actually create it.

The Omen birthday party scene or the monkeys going crazy are both legendary. I remember seeing that for the first time and when the nanny did her thing on the roof I was stunned.

The opening scene in The Exorcist, taking place in Iraq, has always had the creepiest feel. It's not necessarily scary, but it just creates this feeling that something is watching/following you around.

I don't think there is one best horror either, and I agree with some of those lists above. Although I'd definitely add Hellraiser to the 80s greats, along with The Thing.




I saw Basket Case the other day too, lesser known 80s flick about a guy who takes his deformed and crazy Siamese brother everywhere with him. Surprisingly good.
