Just received a formal job offer for $70k + Bonus at a company as a tech consultant/software dev (first job out of college) but I have a final interview coming up with a huge company that treats its employees great and overall much better career path aligned more with what I would like to do.

Do I sign the documents with the company that gave me an offer and back out of the other company gives me an offer?? I have zero white collar family members so I have no idea how this works.

I don’t believe that there will be non compete conflicts if I sign because one is a digital consultant company and the other is biotech (the one I really want)

How long until the final interview? You can tell the company that gave the offer that you would like a few days to think about it. If it's going to be a long wait that might not work.

I wouldn’t lie to them but I wouldn’t show them your hand either and I wouldn’t sabotage yourself.

Accept the job and move forward with it, if you get the other job just be straight up and say your really sorry but an opportunity came by you can’t pass up and you regret wasting their time. Then never ever reference them !

I'd accept and then go through the interview process with the other. If the other offers more, tell the first employer you got the China virus and died.

I would try to counter offer and see if you can get some more money and buy yourself some more time.

I was in this exact same situation a few weeks ago (albeit I have 10+ years experience. Asked for more money, completed the final round at the second firm while they updated paperwork. The 2nd company ended up not offering me, so I was able to get more from the first company and accepted right afterwards.

They should be able to give you a few days to review the written offer, and then like around Thursday/Friday I would ask if they can negotiate once you've had a few days to review. Tell the first firm you are expecting offer elsewhere, and tell 2nd firm you have an offer at the first. It will help you speed up the process.

I was in a sort of similar situation 2 weeks ago. I got hired as an NOC Engineer for a F200 company as first post university job, but I was also interviewing at GS for a Frontend Engineer role and got notification that I passed the first hackerrank assessment and moved on to stage 2 of 3. Stage 2 seemed like a gimme(automated video interview), but Stage 3 was the final boss with a 4-5 hour interview with 4 different people. I personally felt like I wasn't ready for that, so I just thanked the recruiter and said that I took a position elsewhere.

That way I leave on a good note, and if I am interested after I get that crucial 1st year of experience, I can go back since I'm going to be leetcoding my ass off in the next year in my free time anyway.

Call the other company and tell them that you got an offer but you would like to be with them, instead. See what they say. If they don’t give you an offer right off the bat, take the initial offer from the other company. You’re still young. $70K is a lot of money out of college. That is what I would do, though. Call the other company. If they really want you then they will extend an offer, as well.

For your time:

The last time this happened to me I received an offer and asked for all the benefits and out of pocket expenses, to evaluate the entire compensation package. That bought me a week and a half to interview with another company. I told the other company that I had an offer waiting for a response and requested they speed up their interview process for me and then they also made me an offer. I told the previous company that I was evaluating another offer and needed another week to decide and I decided on the second offer.

Most companies will understand it takes time to accept an offer and that there may be competing offers. Just don't make them wait too long and do not decline an offer without another offer in hand, unless you currently have a good job and just looking for the best one.

$70K out of college is pretty good homie.

I honestly think that is a great plan for someone with a lot of experience but as a new college grad with zero experience I am very hesitant to do something like that lol

Funny you did that with the 5 hour interview I did the same thing with another company in the final round lol, it was for a position I didn’t really want and I had schoolwork to do so I was like wtf I’m not able to prepare for that. I’m gonna be doing the leetcode stuff too while I work gotta increase the stock need big checks!!

I would feel more confident telling a company to speed things up if I had 5 years experience lol but as a new grad I am extremely hesitant to do what the big boys in industry do, I will do that in the future for sure tho lol
