Offered a job with the federal government.

I was offered a government job at the GS pay scale of GS5 step 1. It's a nursing assistant for the Veterans Affairs Hospital. Should I take it? Starts at 41k and after reaching step 10 it would be 54k. The pay is low but I also rake in VA disability at the 100 percent level. Thoughts?

take it since it'll be your foot in the door and help you compete for other federal jobs. just dont be complacent and lazy like most GS' are; they get in and dont even bother trying to level up.

what's your end game? what do you want out of it (besides earning mone)?

I was hoping that once I'm a gs5 for a year I can move up the ladder and snag a gs6 or gs7 position.

keep in mind that certain positions are capped at certain grades. so for a nurse assistant, GS-6 might be the cap and the only way to move up is to change careers.

have you looked into voc rehab? it'll extend your GI bill to 48 months. use it to get a degree so can level up faster in the VA.

Federal employee here. Everyone I know who worked for the VA hated it. Might not be a bad idea if you plan to jump to another agency though, nothing to lose to try. 5 is kind of low for entry level, depending where you go entry level can be 9 or 11

This, but keep in mind x2, that while your specific GS position may be capped at 7, you may meet the requirements for a 9 at either a different position at that VA location, or at a different agency. You being 100% will give you gigapoints to compete for a 9 in a few years

Lol at even looking at step 10. If you stay a gs5 for that long you are brain dead. If you take this job you should be spamming usajobs with your resume and hopefully get to gs12 by the time you'd be step 10 srs.
