Are we mere observers of our thoughts rather than the thinker?
Physics not psychological misc
If our brain is just interaction of particles, and if our brain creates whatever consciousness is, then we'd just be observing what is happening. We can't 'will' certain particles to interact to give rise to 'X' thought. If so then free will would not exist.
I'm thinking of the colour blue right now, but did I have a choice to think 'Im going to think about blue' and then think about it. Why did I not think about green? Did I ever have a chance to?
This is not to say that training yourself to think a certain way or adopting different beliefs and philosophy isn't useless for the human experience that's different. As a physical entity though are we really independent thinkers rather than observers of what occurs?

Anyway, op I’ve wondered this too. Everyone has had thoughts they didn’t want to think about, that would be in line with what you’re saying. But the fact you even thought about this also proves you do indeed have control over them also.
This body holding me, be my reminder here that I am not alone.

You'd have to be a wizard outside the universe controlling the particles within

Most people absolutely do not observe their thoughts. Look at the misc. It's a perfect example of zero critical thinking and all feeling and action. If somebody wanted a case study into the mechanisms of emotional regulation, this forum would be a goldmine for them.
*Look at reflection in car window and flex every time crew*
*Use half the roll to wipe after a poo crew*
*Fart in the gym and blame rotten smell on faulty ventilation crew*
*Fart at home and blame it on the dog crew*
*Watch neutron-star density poop mock me as water flushes around it and it stays put crew*
*Drive 2 minutes in the summer and back of shirt gets completely wet crew*
*Coffee black as midnight on a moonless night crew*
*Fat shame my cat on a daily basis crew*

But it doesn't need to be so deep as observing thoughts in an introspective way. Just considering any thoughts people have, randomly occurring or about various subjects. If anything people not being introspective would lend more credence to it just being a matter of physical/biological probability rather than actual autonomy.

I agree. People often say, "we're simply vessels for a series of chemical reactions," and that includes our brain's operations. Those chemical reactions, in turn, are also just a series of particles interacting with one another. This means that, ultimately, we are a product of whatever particles make up the atoms in our brain.
The question you pose is valid- do we have the control to change the particle movement (quantum theory) or is it a matter of quantum predestination? The trillions of particles that make up our being- have they been traveling through the universe in a predetermined fashion since the beginning of time and now make up who we are? This would mean all of our lives are predetermined. Every choice we make and action we take, as big as changing our mind on a career path or as small as choosing to scratch our nose. If not, some other particles must have the ability to be influenced by other particles to then influence particles to "change" our path, if that makes sense to you.
All of that, or there is a higher being, and the systems he put in place are not understood to us. I feel like I just wrote a schizo post, but it does present a possible explanation. We are always searching for the meaning of life and why (and HOW) we are here.

If there is a higher being that'd be fascinating
