A couple of things.

In the 1990''s and especially into the early 2000's, steroids became more and more accessible to everyone, including teenagers. And they were starting to use them more and more. But this picture was taken in approx. 1980, a decade or two before steroid scandals hit pro wrestling and baseball, raising their notoriety. Bodybuilders, Olympic weightlifters, and others like that were obviously using them at that time, but not sixteen-year old boys from Monroe, Louisiana who lived in a one room shack with a dirt floor and no running water. Read Ronnie's autobiography and it will become very clear that he didn't have money for food at that age, let alone steroids.

Probably a great point unless his coaches got them for him. By the early-mid 80’s pretty much every decent college football team was on steroids, and I’m sure that probably trickled down into at least some high schools.


But yeah, if he wasn’t on them and was on a piss poor diet it just shows how much genetics can overcome. Then again, at that time the average person was closer to that than the options of either skinny twig or fat blob we see in teenagers today

LOL dude that's Ronnie Coleman, you can tell he's a naturally muscular young man - hence why he won Mr.O 8 times.. He's not 'just big' there, it's his muscle bellies that give an illusion of power... plenty of even white dudes can look better than that naturally, but probably not at 16.

Yeah I'm not saying it's impossible, but I think it's far more likely that he was on nothing at that point besides government subsidized school lunch.

I'd say even if he was using at that age, his genetics are so far superior to everyone else's that he's like an alien. I used to manage a gym for about a year in my twenties, and I was around rampant steroid use. These were mostly grown men in their twenties, and you'd be shocked by how many of them didn't even look half as good as Ronnie does in that picture. You'd also be shocked by how much they were using to look that way, too.

He's very open about his steriod usage now. He apparently was natty until his first Olympia win.

Even if that's not true, you can't discredit his amazing top tier genetics and work ethic. People even on heaps amount of crap would never look anywhere as close to him. (Ded fkn Srs)

LOL let's not get carried away here - but he certainly had lot's of potential and should have instead remained natural and healthy IMO. He would be a solid 220 lb 6 foot tall man with visible abs.

Pretty much the same reasons as Drewdarden. I find it hard to believe he was spending money on steroids when he could barely scrape together enough cash to afford his car. Also when you consider his later transformation and the fact that he went on to put on another 100+lbs of muscle.

Most of these dudes, if you go back and look at their teenage pics, they already looked better than most people would after lifting natty for 10 years srs. Genetics are a helluva drug

There is one exception that is really interesting to me. This is Markus Ruhl as a youngster:




He was definitely fit, but more like abercrombie fit and nothing to indicate he would become a mass monster
