Thread: Power Came Back On But Not To Everything? What do (Srs)

Power Came Back On But Not To Everything? What do (Srs)

There was some storm in Toronto and my power went out for almost an hour then came back on.. or so I thought.

The fridge, stove, ac unit and some other lights arent working.

I looked at fuse box and none of the fuses were switched off. I put them all on and off just to see if I could "reset" it anyways and the same problem persists.. except I lost the kitchen light now too after doing that.

I had to go to work so I couldnt troubleshoot anymore for my gf but anyone have any solutions or ideas?

Canada has 208 ie 2 hot wires so possibly one "phase" (they don't like to call it that here) might be out further upstream.
(see big black wire) So every second single switch should or shouldn't work (that is not mechanically connected like the 40A,30 or 15A one)
ie in this picture the 3rd breaker down (20A) on left side would give a good indication, if one worked but the other didn't most likely a problem upstream.

Those units typically run on 220 versus what everything else is running on 110. So they require both poles of power to be continuously running which I bet isn’t happening. There is probably a comprised line or something in the transformer that you can’t do a thing about.

This is most likely an issue for the power company.

There has been reports of downed power lines all over the city apparently.

So its possible that the house can only have some power? lol

As long as its something I cant fix myself, can stop worrying

Most likely your service has two "hots" and you lost one that is why there is partial power. This would be further upstream (could be a pole fuse/service etc)

Some devices use two hots like washer/dryers, ranges and sometimes heaters, so these def won't work. They will also be two pole circuits or joined with the little silver link you see in the picture.

That's why every second single (not double) circuit might or might not work the way the power order for the hots is coming off the breakers.

I'm guessing you are good now though!

Damn, I’ve never ever heard of this 2 phase poverty electricity.

Here in ‘murrica, if you have juice coming into the box and you don’t have power - you’ve got a bad breaker. A literal monkey could figure it out.
