define effective

its primarily protein by weight (assuming it's a good quality)

but if you are dieting in the sense you are trying to restrict calories not sure why you would want to take calories in liquid form over solid nutrient dense food

nah... whey pretty much turns straight into fat while dieting. Unless you can lift heavy with max intensity do not even touch whey. chit is a heart attack waiting to happen and should be reserved for professional athletes because of it's anabolic qualities
