Justin Timberlake Sells 100% of Song Catalog to Hipgnosis for ~$100M

Justin Timberlake, one of the most successful pop singers of the past 20 years, has sold a song catalog to Hipgnosis Song Management, the company has announced.

Hipgnosis has acquired 100% of all of Justin Timberlake’s copyright, ownership and financial interests of the writer and publisher’s share of public performance income, and the catalog of musical compositions written by Justin Timberlake, according to the announcement. Also included in the sale to Hipgnosis are the worldwide administration rights to the compositions, subject to the remaining term of Universal Music’s administration rights, which expire in 2025. Further terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition has been made on behalf of Hipgnosis Songs Capital, a partnership between Hipgnosis Song Management and funds managed by Blackstone.

don't get these deals. sometimes it works out (re: seinfeld) but for most these folks either fade away completely or have some almost ironic resurgence.

why would someone pay that much for timberlands? michael jackson sure though but more cuz he was a character.

100M seems pretty low for an entire catalog full of hits (I personally think his music is fukkn TRASH in every which way)

Some artists are making bank well into their 70s on their old music royalties.

Legit can't think of a timberlake song (thankfully) but 100 million in 2022 is a joke for all the songs and rights, considering a rundown crackhouse in LA is a million.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I have clients buying $60M of property deals right now in relatively small cities, so to think that you could buy all of Justin Timberlake's songs for that much seems like less than market.

I guess his songs aren't all classics, but there are definitely a handful in there that will be played for decades in random situations.

It's like when you win the lotto, you decide if you want a monthly payout for more money overall or a lump sump for less overall, but you get it all at once.

I'm not sure how much he'd make off all the royalties, but he's not Celine Dion where it's possible to make so much off of royalities you can't really put a price on the rights. Justin might make 150m from the songs he has now in 20 or 30 years but with inflation and all having that 100m now makes more sense if he doesn't blow through it all in a year or two.
