Anyone go learn how to be come self disciplined?

Currently struggle with discipline to do anything. I have zero self discipline. How did you build self discipline? I talked to a friend about this who is a self made millionaire and he told me it’s because I'm too comfortable in life to improve my situation, if I wasn’t i’d do something about it. Didn’t really help me on building self discipline.

What do you want to do that you don’t do?

Is there specific instances of not being disciplined letting you down on something you wanted?

Your friend is right. I wasn't happy with my life and did something about it. If you're comfortable, you won't change.

Going to school right now while working a full time job. I want to finish school so I can get an higher income but I never put in the work. I tell myself I will study and end up being on my phone for a few hours instead. Also if something needs to be done around my house I end up putting it off until last second. Feels like I just go to work come home do nothing and repeat.

Start with small stuff then maybe. Instead of putting all the house chores off til later tell yourself you will do 5-10minutes then relax for a bit then pick it back up. Same thing with studying. Sometimes the hard part is just getting started.

Maybe focus on discipline for “not” doing something. Like tell yourself no phone for 30minutes while you do a few things. The first step is the hardest. Once you are in a position to make something a habit you have the tools you need. Then making it a habit turns it into who you are.

Do you skip wiping your ass?

If not, then that's because you believe wiping your ass is essential and cannot be skipped.

When you look at other aspects of your life in the same way, you will become disciplined regarding those aspects of your life.

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy you are taught to monitor your thoughts and think about your belief system, and it's a good idea. For instance, if you think about wiping your ass, you have a whole collection of ideas about that and fears. So, you will try to do the best wiping job possible.

If you were trapped out in the woods for days, you would figure out a way to keep your ass wiped.

That's because you solidly believe in wiping your ass.

If you aren't doing "important" things in life that's because you believe they are not important. Your mom might ask you what you think of college, or whatever, and you will automatically say it's important. But, if you didn't go, you don't think it is. If you didn't get straight As and master the subject, then you did not think it's important.

If you aren't doing a good job at something, you do not think it's important.

If you want to do better in life you must do what you think is important. If you think nothing is important then you need to do a lot of thinking about why the rest of us find things important.

Sounds kinda normal TBH. I have more and less productive days. Sometimes it is about energy level or weather.

IME it is easier to build habits. And from experience easier to start right than to course correct later.

Maybe you could try front loading study time into your day? Not sure how early you would need to get up to do that, but if you did get up and study before work when you should be more mentally fresh then you could comfortably rot in the evening after work.

- get up
- take a short walk [supposed to help mental focus to move first]
- quick shower
- study time, maybe coffee/food while you study
- go to work

Getting started would probably be the hardest part. The more days you stay at it the easier it should become.

Lots of good feedback ITT, wanted to highlight what I thought was particularly good / resonated with me a bit:

TheAdlerian - Comparing wiping your arse as something that's essential and of top importance for consistency, to anything else in life which might be a part of your goals. And to focus on the idea that if something's not important to you, you should ensure you evaluate why it's important to most people, and based on truly processing this, you can conclude why to do something, or not to do something, given its inherent realistic value understood by yourself.

katya422 - Frontloading the tasks/behaviors needed into your days. I personally do this when it comes to the gym. My day ALWAYS starts with the gym, even if I'm not in the mood, negative-minded, tired, whatever. Not saying every workout I do is 100%, or otherwise exceeds my expectations or something. But going and getting at least the majority of the intended workout done can be enough to maintain confidence in discipline.

This makes sense.

I mean, you bet your ass I wouldn’t go to work for 8 hours if I didn’t think getting paid was important

Having someone else teach you self discipline is sort of the opposite of how its supposed to work. The self part being the key.

If you must know though, its about setting goals.

Sure, its easy to say you will be a millionaire by the time you are 30 but how are you going to do that?

You need realistic easily attainable goals that you can hit in the short term. Then you need goals that are a bit harder to attain and would require you to hit most of the little goals.

Then bigger and bigger goals that require all the previous steps.

So in the end, you are really only ever attaining the smaller goals you set for yourself and they are accumulating into the bigger ones.

Most people just set a giant goal, have no idea how to get there and quit in frustration.

Look at it like hitting a fastball from a major league pitcher. Some guys do it all day and have no issues with it. us normal guys would get scared to death and strike out every time.

if we started off hitting pitches like 60 mph though and slowly progressed up to the faster ones, it wouldnt seem so daunting. Eventually we could comfortably stand in the box with the fastest pitchers.

Making the right decision even when it is not easy as fast as possible is really all that being disciplined is if you can basically do this on auto-pilot you will become a mog-maxxxer in no time. To many people let their emotions or spend to much time making a decision just to ultimately make the wrong decision which just wastes so much time there is no chance to make it in life living like that.

Right, BUT there are things you believe are important and you would work on them for eight hours or more an do so for free.

Many people are trained to agree with things in life and they're just responding like dogs, they aren't thinking if the actually agree or are just saying they do.

It's very important to figure out what you actually believe in and what you do not.

When you figure that out you can work with conviction about what you think is important.
