Yeah that was a really solid album, but it wasn’t at all original. They just took the same recipe 100 other bands were using and made it work. Obviously they deserve credit for it, especially considering how young they were and the fact it was a 3 piece band. Like so many others in that era though, they debuted with an awesome album then fell on their face. Actually, the only fall I can think of that compares to it is Bush’s Sixteen Stone followed up by Razorblade Suitcase.

They did it well. I think Neon Ballroom represents one of the masterpieces of the genre.

When Neon Ballroom came out in '99, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.

legit on the same level as mumble rap

nirvana was special because it brought something to the table and you can reflect on that years later. these guys are just copycats with music that aged terribly. Hot take the lead singers later songs are better.

Nostalgia is real, great band from the 90s. Their earlier albums Frogstomp and Freak show was their best stuff I think. Neon Ballroom had some good songs but it just didn't hit the same.

Came in expecting Death Angel's debut when all their members were teens and the drummer was something like 14 years old. Then, I realized people here probably have no idea what Death Angel is.

Also don't forget Johnny Lang.

Don't even know where to begin. Absolute retardedness comparing mumble rap to the riffs and the musicality and the vocal skills here. It's not even the same league.

Is it original? No. They've openly said that they copied nirvana and soundgarden. Even the name of the band came from Nirvana's song Sliver and something else. Does that make the music any less enjoyable. The way I see it, Maradona or Ronaldo did not invent football/soccer. Doesn't mean they're no good.

Well said. Even if you're copying a style of music, it's not easy writing songs that scratch that itch and that people want to listen to. So much of it is psychological. There's no hard formula otherwise every band that can write music would never fade and write garbage.

I always thought of them as the lesser of the grunge bands but you gotta admit unplugged was amazing.
