June 6, 1944 D-Day

Every year, it feels like fewer and fewer people care about what happened in Normandy 78 years ago. But I think it is worth remembering the sacrifices of thousands who fought and died on the beaches in the greatest invasion the world has ever seen.

Was there about 5 years ago on Memorial Day weekend. It's a long drive and not much to do there but highly recommend it to any American or Canadian visiting France. The beach is truly massive, nothing like the much steeper beach in Saving Private Ryan- you can walk hundreds of yards and only be in water up to your waist. Water is cold and the currents are strong. Do it with gear, obstacles and incoming fire? **** that noise.

For a lot of years I would go visit with D-Day veterans on this day. All have sadly passed on now.

We always see images of the beach landing but tend to forget (or never learned) about the 2nd Ranger Battalion that climbed the 110 foot cliffs of Pointe du Hoc under German fire from above.

My grandpa is about the only WW2 vet that I know that is still alive (97). He was on pumper crew. He talks about them brining in massive tankers to the coast and then pumped the fuel all the way to the front lines. He manned an intermediate pumping location somewhere in France. He's still has his personality that I remember growing up, but his memory is pretty fuzzy now for stuff within the last 10 years. Still pretty sharp if it happened 50 years ago, though.

Was gonna say never really thought about the impact of what our veterans went through until I saw Saving Private Ryan. It's a shame we hear more about pride month then our veterans who sacrificed.
