Awesome, I have a few and their coop is right next to the compost pile, ,they keep it under control from worms and insects and they're growing healthy mostly by just eating that. I give them corn sometimes but they sustain themselves mostly by keeping the compost under control.

It's a lot easier than it sounds aquaponics is a bit more advanced but conventional backyard farming with your own compost is incredibly easy even kids can do it by themselves. You only need time and patience to do it, nowadays lots of people don't have neither time nor patience but it's not really hard or too time consuming.

You can start composting in a trash bin and planting some tomatoes in a pot and take it from there

Also not in this realm but what I’m beginning to do with my property since a lot of it is undeveloped forest.

Herbs like sorrel, sage, oregano, mint etc all grow readily around here. Wild fennel takes well, wild asparagus, strawberries etc..

I have a bunch of starter plants and I start small but only harvest like less than 50% and let the rest go to seed. Even help spread seeds and spread plants. In about 5 years my forest will my filled with tons of edible vegetation and fruits etc.. they are easily foraged but require just a few hours of work a year during walks.

Instead of trying to force traditional vegetables that need lots of love to grow somewhere, just give tiny pushes to things that want to grow and are happy in the area.

Portland was amazing for this, where I’m at now it gets alot colder and frosts can go into may.

(Also on the note with neighbors I’m fortunate enough basically every house around me is some type of farm, and most of them still have their 5foot trump signs up, so we’re all on the same page about what happens to any mutants who make it across the Washington desert from Seattle.
