Car mountain run. Pics and vids. GREAT DAY! (car guys only ;) )

Took the day to go with a group of friends up to the mountains for some driving. Nice mix of friends and cars. So all you car haters that dont get this....this is what it is all about. A great day, with good friends. Diving some great roads. Eating lunch overlooking the mountains and doing it all again.

The little lotus has no trouble hanging in the mountains. I think almost every car that I was there with had 650 or more HP. 3 w/ apporx 1000. The 812 superfast has 800+ and the lotus had no problems. My lotus is about same power to weight as the Huracan, but he has a 7 speed DCT. BUT I had more fun rowing gears!

Life is good! I broke another windshield is the only downer. I cracked the windshield on my Huracan on the last mountain run, and this time I took the lotus. But I am not letting it ruin my day.

You probably have no idea how hard it is to get in and out of this type of car. The chassis is a mmonocoque aluminum. The car has race bucket seats with full race harnesses. The sides of the tub are about where an arm rest is in a normal car. Meaning you have to 'fall into' the car.

Getting in and out is a challenge. The pedal box is very narrow also. Almost requires driving shoes, but small (not wide) sneakers will work. Flip flops are too wide. Trust me, I know this

Removing the steering wheel makes it a ton easier to get in without having to break you legs. Remember you fall down into the car. Your butt sits about 4" off the ground. You have to put your leg over the door sill, but under the steering wheel. This doesnt really work in a straight line. I am not fat, but I have good leg mass, and well...good all mass. To get in and out comfortably, you have to have skinny girl legs. Like 150lb guys would be OK. 500lb squatters.....not so mucy

This is pretty much a race car and there is a reason race cars have removable steering wheels, and it is not to look cool. It is because getting in and out is challenging. Also on track if you ever have to be removed from the car, the wheel coming off makes this easier. (on track you have to keep windows down for this reason). In case you missed it, this car gets tracked. The wang and other aero things on the car are for function not looks. This car is built for the track.

This is a pic of the inside of my old orange one. You can see the tub very good in this pic. This car had the stock wheel (which is slightly smaller dia. My OMP wheel is more a 'racing' wheel and not perfectly round. I also have a spacer on it for better positioning. Getting in an out w/ stock wheel without the harnesses was not too bad, but once you start other mods, getting in and out get less than graceful. Once you put a helmet on...forget it!

Look at the door sill, and then the bottom of the steering wheel. Your leg has to go over the sill but under the wheel and slide down in the tunnel. Again, the stock set up was not impossible, but harnesses also come into play since you have to drop in the seat without pinning all your belts...etc. Kinda like an awkward ballet.

Anyway, a lot of people dont realize how cool the lotus is and this it is built like a formula race car in the pre-carbon era. All just a bonded alum tub. That is why my car weighs only 1900lbs

Cool pics. I always had great fun and adrenaline rush doing things like that. I have done it in a long time since when i stopped to think about it, i found it highly irresponsible to be putting other people in danger for some fun. Unless you guys had a police escort head up first and block the roads?

Do you notice a performance loss at elevation on those cars? Or is that only noticeable with turbos?

We have 2 way radios and we run a spotter up the roads and we wait behind. We do little short 2 mile +/- runs, sometimes shorter depending on the particular 'runs'. We just line up and wait and then when the spotter clears traffic we will jump ahead.

These areas are frequented for these type runs and people come across the country to run them. It is like a tourist thing. We will only do them during the week because the weekends are too crowded.

Then a little further away is "Tail of the Dragon" which gets really packed. We like to stay a little more low-key and it was just a nice lunch run.

The biggest danger is if you go off, there is very little room and no shoulder to recover. My buddy messed up his ZL1 1LE, but could have been much worse. Certainly something to be careful with.

It really was so nice. Just a bummer on the wind screen. Now lost 2 up there. But that is life. Going to see about replacing windscreen in the Lotus. They make a light-weight Lexan racing one. (not DOT approved) but I dont think anyone would notice. Saves about 15lbs. If I put that on, I would put tear-away PPF on it. Just going to drive it for now as the crack is on the side of the frame

Mine is supercharged and you cant feel any performance loss. We are not at crazy elevations. And the temps were 90 at home and 78 in the moutains so temp will have a large impact also with boost an intercooling.

I am planning a motor build for this winter in the lotus. And trans

. But I think I will be going to a very large front mount heat exchanger for the air to water intercooler. Being a track driven car, heat soak is a real concern. But you just overkill things like heat exhangers in prep. Eg, I have dual front mount oil coolers and track oil temps never hit over 210 even under the hardest driving in 95 deg temps, which probably is 120 track temps.

When you build it to track, you just overbuild everything. Building street power is pretty easy as the demands are very light. You might accelerate hard here and there, but on the track you are running 100% for 30 minutes at a time. I just had to replace my entire engine wiring harness because there must be a minute crack in the insulation of some wire. Trying to find it would be impossible. The car would go into limp mode on the track when temps were above 90deg OAT after about 20 min. Heat and just enough to allow some voltage to leak, throws and ECU code. NEVER could get this to happen on the street. Wont even do it on track in cooler temps.

The conditions on the track and what the car has to go through are unique.

The C60 is not a trans like likes to shift fast. You can force it, but you will be rebuilding it soon.

However it is a 'synchro' trans and 'double clutching' is not necessary. Car has a racing clutch and lightweight alum/ 2piece flywheel and I do heel toe on downshifts, but even that is not necessary. There are mods to reduce throw and hence speed shifting, but at the power levels I am putting out, I will be breaking this trans. I actually already have a spare trans and it will be getting an upgraded custom gearset to alleviate this prob.

I know lots of guys who race lotus and no on double clutches. Some run sequentials but that is a different animal as you know and not street practical. You need to get off youtube and all the 'experts'.

The supra is a cool car, and I like them for nostalgia, but only does one thing good. I would be happier with a GTR which is a FANTASTIC handling car even though it is a boat. They are amazing cars and the performance will surprise you. I like cars that drive and GTR is an INCREDIBLE platform. Watched one run the uphill esses at VIR at 145 without slowing down. Fukin incredible.

So my buddy who went off in the ZL1 1LE turned his flat into considerably more damage.

We drove it down the mountain to get cell svc which was about 10 miles on the flat, and it did OK.

He called AAA and said to just shove off and he would wait. (I had a 2 hr drive back home).

Well he got tired of waiting for AAA and found a tire shop that had a tire for it 2 miles away. So he figured it survived the 10 miles down the mountain. Well it did not

Tire let go and took out his whole 1/4 panel. Bummer but he took it well.

He was SUPER lucky. The rock side wall and low(er) shoulders mean if you just drop a tire in the slightest, it can end badly. Probably not going to get killed but very easy to total a car. The ZL1 1LE is an insane platform, and it gives you TONS of confidence since the nannies are doing so much behind the scenes. Always adapting suspension and torque vectoring. Some have said it is impossible to spin the car out. Well....that is not 100% accurate. Pretty much him and the ACR are the fastest though. They pull on me on the straights but I think I can catch them in the turns, but the ACR is a true downforce car. That car is essentially a race car and being driven by a pro level driver. So running 3rd in this group is not too bad for the little lotus.

The lotus scares me in a way because I have not found it's limit. We found it at VIR and it snap turned at it turning limits (not really what you want). But I had heat cycled tires on it. So it has new rubber and will be getting MUCH higher rate springs over the weekend and corner balance. Knowing what the car will do at it's limit is important. With my spring selection I am hoping it will give a slight push, but I wont be able to tell till we get on track.

There are NO nannies in the lotus. No traction control or stability SAS. I have the ABS disabled and it is just a pure analog experience. You and the car. Really a great way to experience driving and something that could not be produced today.

Yeah it's insane what GM was able to do with those active dampers. I'd guess the Lotus is more raw/fun to drive, similar to a c5 Z06?

I considered buying a 90s Viper, the standard blue and white stripes, but like you said, they're surprisingly hard to drive/handle when you make a lot of power.

The early gen vipers are really raw. That is an awesome thing, but also can be a handful if you dont get to understand how the car behaves at it's limits. They are one of the last drivers cars and you cant legally build a car that raw any longer. They are now filled with computers working in the background.

The guy we were doing the mountain run with had a Zo6. Not sure if it was C5 or 6, but he has it modded to putting out about 950 to the wheels. The car is insane and is built for the track. That is kind of what is cool. So many different approaches, and even different budgets all can get the job done. I like them all!

I brought this home today...... I think I am doing a very bad thing

Gave it to me till monday to try. The paint is insane and looks like car was dipped in lava. Spyder and a very nice spec with lots of carbon. These cars are just crazy and almost makes a 860hp huracan feel boring. My son loves it. First thing we did was wash it. That is how you really get to know a car!

Actually if you are really into racing, it is not far off the mark. Spending thousands on titanium and carbon fiber to save ounces when a guy may be 20-30lbs overweight.

I am very lean but I carry a good amt of mass. I am not a pro driver by any means, and I have spent silly amount of money on things to save weight in the car. If I were truly serious, I would just shed mass. But that aint gonna happen. So it just is what it is! That is why I am teaching my son to drive. He is still only about 120lbs. By next year I have little doubt he will be faster on track than me!

Thanks man. Just got back from a night drive with it. It is a pretty incredible machine. Very different than the Lambo. The Lambo is like a rolling extravaganza of sledge hammers and brute force. The McLaren is like a Tiger staliking prey or laser guided missile with perfect focus.

They are both really cool, but in different ways. The 720s is the first car to scare me in a long time. I would hate to try to find the limits of this car. But braking, and steering inspire so much confidence. Boot by gear does a good job of keeping the tires under the car, but even in 4th it will spin tires. The acceleration is just brutal and almost like a tractor beam. Where my supercharged Huracan is like being shot out of a cannon. Just different vibes.

The car has full carbon buckets which feel great driving, but make it a little tougher to get in and out of the car gracefully. The have no power. Just a manual old school slider rail. They are all about weight savings and shave 44 lbs out of the car with that option.

I'll post some more pics. 99% sure it is the car for me, but have till Monday to decide.

My son and I pulled the Huracan out and did some back to back runs in the two. I think the 720 is the way we are leaning.
