Jazz drummer hears Tool for the first time



To me it's a such a blessing to be exposed to new "alien" ideas music whatever

I remember thinking yuck when I first heard Tool or any kind of heavy rock
but after sometime I grew to owning some Metal albums
matter of fact Fear Factory has one of my top 20 favorite albums to workout to

I felt the same way about house/dance/jungle when a friend first played me some of it
I went from thinking that's lame to loving some of it

old time blues the same way

I was like WTF is this garbage
I came around big time on that stuff

At first I thought it was gonna be really hard for him to pick up since it’s such a choppy track, but with his skill and feel for music I think that made it easier because he just fell into the natural rhythm of the song. And I found it interesting how much it pulled me in when he leaned on the hi-hat(for example around the 5:45 mark if I remember correctly). In some ways that worked better to pull me in than the original track’s reliance on the bass drum. He did a crazy good job considering he’d never heard it and doesn’t really enjoy that type of music.

Yeah, but moreso on particular songs than genres. I listen to 60s music a lot, love 60s rock, motown and such. This song came on 60s on 6 (SiriusXM) and I literally said aloud, "wtf is this"? Then it was in my heard later and I ended up liking it.

Oftentimes I know if I like a song the very first time I hear it. I'm HUGE into music. I listen to music 8 hours at work, 30m to and from work, while in the shower, while cooking/cleaning my house and I go see live local music several times a month and more famous bands 4 or 5 times a year. It's a very big part of my life.

Yeah, the 40s were awesome for that as well. Ella, Louis, Nina, Billie. I have a playlist that I like to cook to called Sunday morning full of 40s. I love cooking and if I ever had a restaurant we'd play 40s. Cozy af

I’ve done that with lots of genres. Never liked country for over 30 years but now there are lots of country artists/songs that I like. When I first heard electronic music(Chemical Brothers being the first one) I didn’t like it at all. When I started going to raves I fell in love with it and now all types of electronic music are what I listen to most. And even when I got into lots of different types I really disliked progressive, but now it’s probably my favorite of them all.


And there are some bands like that as well. Back in the 90’s I loved lots of different music but never cared for the Counting Crows. Now I say they are probably one of the top 20 bands from the 90’s. I think it just took me growing up to full appreciate the depth of the music. That’s the band that made the biggest jump for me, but there are others that did similar things. And even some that I used to really like, but now when I go back and listen to them it sounds completely different and I don’t like it at all.

tool's biggest problem is the lead singer. very very weak vocal lead. no you can't perform mental gymnastics to say otherwise. he's dog chit.

Wow. Extremely impressive. Not a drummer but a beatboxer and I used to listen to a lot of drumming. This track is a little hard to get sometimes even listening. Hard to really tell because it oddly meshes just right.

This guy is an amazing drummer. He slowly fell into the feel of it and brought his own flare. It all felt extremely natural despite being a jazz drummer.

Love these types of videos.
