Why is no one else freaking out about how overpopulated the planet is?

Every time I travel, I'm reminded of how overpopulated the planet is.

Crazy how it seems every highway, airport, shopping center, etc in this country (US) is just PACKED.

JFL at people talking about there being a future for our species when we'll wipe ourselves off the planet under our own weight first.

There's also a lot of empty land, or just generally wasted spaces.

Honestly, if we don't make changes within the next 10-25 years, I could see it having heavy consequences for the generations to come.

Real issue is population collapse, not overpopulation. Birth rates are plummeting everywhere outside Africa.

Solution to packed highways, shopping centers and airports in the US is to simply stop mass immigration. The US has had a negative birth rate for ages.

Uhhmm, I don’t think land is the issue buddy. Finite resources like potable water, energy, food ect are. No chit we can physically cram more humans on the planet, but they all need food, water and shelter. Cant believe someone always says this stupid chit when talking about overpopulation. I just watched a youtube video of the top 5 most useless creations blah blah blah. One of them was some city they built to move the capitol and of course nobody wanted to move inland to the new city, (forgot what asian country this was) because the costal land was way better. Everything is mostly overcrowded on coastal areas. Move inland and you can go hundreds of miles without seeing people. Even in China with their Ghost cities. So much unused land and infrastructure.

But yeah, if covid wiped out 2 billion people, the world would get a major boost in it's life expectancy.

Not really that big an issue we've likely hit peak population, expect world population to decline over this century.

Yeah not like there are non-renewable resource shortages or anything.

Solar and nuclear can both provide virtually unlimited energy. We produce way too much food as it is, and are nowhere even remotely close to peak production.

As for fresh water, industrialized countries only need to stop mass migration if they experience shortages. As has already been mentioned, all of the population growth is in Africa, largely thanks to financial aid pouring into the continent from outside.

What do you propose we do to control the population growth and how many people do you feel the world can sustain?

Traveling to just cities? If I drive a state or two over to visit friends who have moved I always marvel at how much open space there is. So much uninhabited land, so much nature.

Could definitely stand to change HOW we live. But "overpopulation" is a myth, propaganda perpetuated with eugenicists as an excuse to cull the masses.

These.

All signs point to collapse OP. I was too was taught that there are too many humans, that we would overshoot our planet's carrying capacity like bacteria overgrowing their medium in a petri dish.

However we are AT or very NEAR peak right now. Peter Zeihan China will hit the wall anytime from now up to about 10 years from now max due to their rapidly aging and declining population. Maybe he is wrong, I don't agree with him on everything. But everyone knows that China is in trouble due to their dropping population including China.

A two child policy is below replacement rate BTW.

I think the most reasonable way to keep the population below its current level is by controlling the food supply. Animals reproduce to the level sustainable by their environment, if I start feeding every raccoon that comes to my house 3 hotdogs a night it will only take a few generations and I'll have more ****** than chicago. As it goes with lions and raccoons so it goes with man. Our issue is that with technological advances in food procuration we're able to increase our growth and energy use well beyond what is reasonably sustainable.
If I stop buying hotdogs it won't take long till the raccoons are back down to a maintainable population. Cut back the food production and our own population will be back down to match it shortly.
It's really just a matter of what level of population you're wanting to keep us at.

Rest assured, incels are doing their part. Their lack of reproduction combined with the random people they regularly kill in mass shootings will solve this population crisis within one generation.

Oh wait, i forgot that poor people can't get abortions now. Nevermind then, we're screwed.

Our infrastructure is designed to support the population as cheap as possible man.

The roads being full is not really suggestive of overpopulation. The population size dictates the infrastructure, not the other way around. Using personal observations of traffic (I assume you didn’t document anything and are making comparisons from memory), could easily be disregarded as an ineffective population measuring tool.

In nature, a species’ population will continue to grow until it reaches the limit of the natural resources. At that time, with no other environmental factors, it usually just levels out.

As humans with the entire world and all it’s resources at our disposal, and our ability to manipulate those resources with technology and increased knowledge, it is going to take a while for that to happen to us.

At the same time, things like cooperate greed leading to inappropriate resource hoarding and control can (likely are) impact our population numbers as well. Potable water seems to be the new favorite toy of the rich.

Don’t get me wrong, the increased population does have negative consequences for the individual. Competition for jobs and women, but those are not terminal to a species.
