USA brahs, do people from where you grow up end spread out in the USA?

I grew up a small european country where most people are concentrated in around 2-3 big cities.

Went to UNI in the UK outside London and now live in London. I met people from all over the UK at uni and after graduation all of them ended in different places in the UK. Feelssadman because I wish I could live with all of them.

Is this how things are in the USA? You live in place X, state Y up until high school. Then you go to Harvard, others go to Stanford, some work in NYC others in Cali.

Fuark, I wish I could have a bit better sense of community.

Pretty much. No jobs in my hometown, so the successful ones left and went to either coast.

I grew up outside of Chicago. My college and grad schools feed into the Chicago market, but I suppose I went there knowing that. I'd say the majority of the kids from my grammar school and high schools stayed in Chicago though.

It would be different if there wasn't a robust job market here, but my career prospects are besr here for the time being.

100%, except the small town people.

I grew up and was raised in small-town ass ohio. After college I have since lived in Nashville, Knoxville, Chicago, Seattle, Phoenix, and Dallas.

Chicagoland crew checking in, was surprised how many people in my friend/peer group never left.

They all still hang out too, which I admire and am sad to miss out on, but I'm glad I moved to see more of the country and try something new. You can always move home.

Generally speaking not really. Some will jump ship for jobs or other reasons. Majority of people live within 50 miles of where they grew up statistically.

Yeah my family spread out quite a bit. Literally everyone (parents, grandparents, aunt, uncle, cousins etc) lived on the same street in Queens NY at one point. Now only my Aunt, Uncle, and Cousin and his wife and son are still there. The rest are on Long Island, Pennsylvania, Florida, Nebraska, and Arizona.

I think this has become the norm for GenX and younger - go where the jobs are. Other than my brother/family I don't know anyone living local to me that I knew prior to high school. None of the people I spent my time with in my 20's are still living around here. There are some that I new most in my early 30's that move away and moved back, but none of them are very close by.

My mom and dad grew up in this area and stayed until they died. My dad still socialized with a few of his friends from high school.

I'd say 90% of the people I went to HS with still live within a 25 sq mile radius of where we grew up

I'd say the majority of people around here never live more then 50 miles from where they were born (srs).


I have lived other places and eventually moved nearer to home. Its an incredibly strange feeling to return. Even if you aren't from the greatest place ever. There is just something about arriving to a place where you have dozens on dozens of family members. Dozens of old friends. And hundreds of acquaintances/people you know.

Where I'm from, yeah. Where I live now most people been here their whole life. Minus the people that came here to retire.
