It was never about libs or conservatives. It was made an issue purely because the DC foreign policy establishment known as The Blob did not like Trump and mobilized all available resources to terminate his presidency.

It's more of a question for the super lib voters who decided any type of border control was racist. I understand it's all ****ed from a top level - just trying to understand how the minds work for the people who actually believed it.

They decided it was racist because they were told to think so. And the rest who know better wanted open borders because they suspect that when granted amnesty, those voters will vote dem. Same reason Reagan gave amnesty before, when immigrants were mostly red.

As far as ordinary people go, most people don't want to see some hard working, otherwise law abiding, illegal deported simply for wanting to create a better life for his or her family. There is empathy for them. But people also forget about the huge amount of drugs smuggled at the border and the not so nice illegals who murder and rape innocent people. They are rare, but we absolutely have to stop them from coming in.

Nobody wants to deport Maria the line cook who works long hours so her son can have a better life. They want to deport MS13 rapists and chit who keep coming back.

Not even Trump wants to deport the hard working illegals. He even implied as much in his speech. They want to go after the "bad hombres". And there are many of these.
