My Friend Asked Me To Be The Godfather Of His Son

My friend just had a kid a couple weeks ago and he asked me tonight if I would be the Godfather. I told him I’d be honored.

Anybody on here a Godfather? My understanding is generally it’s basically an invitation to be a part of the child’s life.

That’s really cool they highly think of you to ask you to be their son’s Godfather.
For most the roll of Godparent also means in the event something happens to the parents, you step in to help raise the child.

I know it used to be associated with that responsibility but I’m not sure that it still is for the majority. But perhaps you are right. My Godparents never did anything for me, they both moved out of state and didn’t play much of an active role in my life.

I was definitely honored to be asked regardless.

I do not think you need to stay involved.

I think the "God" part means they expect some religious affiliation.

And usually attend the baptism and ceremonies etc. no legal obligation although traditionally you were “expected “to raise the kid if the parents died. Legally that has been replaced by living trusts etc. lawyers don’t make any money off of godfather rules.

I am an Agnostic-Atheist but I was baptized. They aren’t a religious couple either, I think it’s more ceremonial than anything.

Yes, except like 0.0001% of people have any chance of leading someone else's child to good values without starting with a system like religion and its mostly coherent values.

I have very old school values, I’m a reactionary. My morals and values are far better than the majority of religious types in this day and age. Especially considering most people at least in the West are Christian but in selective/minimal amounts, it’s in name only.

How will you navigate others you admit are worse than you?

Relationships do not work by simply doing things right. You need to share values.

You can easily ask them what the expectations are for you. By asking, you know exactly what they’d like for you to do or not do.

My ex sister in-law has godchildren. They’re her best friend’s, since high school, children. Her friend doesn’t have any family at all. So my ex sis has taken on more of an Aunt roll to them.
