Is freedom of speech being eroded?

10 years ago you could say what you want, within reason.

Now if you say the “wrong” thing you are cancelled, can be fired. And by “wrong” I mean does not fit the new wone narrative.

I steer clear of controversial subjects at work but it does seem the freedom of speech is becoming less and less…

The West lectures the rest but we are not as democratic as we used to be.

I think people exaggerate this a bit. America is still waaaaay better than places with hate speech laws. I think most canceling is individual actors pressuring private companies. It's crappy but it's not really a freedom of speech issue.

You didn't even mention big tech censoring you on their platforms, or de platforming you all together if you say something they disagree with. Useful idiots applaud this and then will call you the fascist.

Of course it is. Look at all the hate speech laws implemented worldwide in various country.

It starts with the Overton window of what is "acceptable discourse" which is slowly being narrowed, now everything is "racist, sexist" etc. Consciously it's important to push back by speaking about "controversial" topics as this influences others to do the same, which helps to extend the Overton window. As long as people keep talking about certain subjects in their day-to-day lives and conversations they can help stop that speech being outlawed.

never forget that after George Floyd, tons of channels with "alternative" views on covid, politics, etc were scrubbed and deleted from youtube/reddit/wikipedia/google search etc
