Just watched the movie Heat (1995) for the first time……fukkkkkk

You know those movies you’ve heard about for years but for some reason you just never got around to watching them? This was one of those movies for me.





I learned some interesting things about this scene in the comment section. Evidently they had two SAS guys teach the actors how to make this shootout look real. Some marine said that they were shown this scene to teach them how to correctly fire and advance effectively. And that one officer told them in boot camp that if they can’t reload a mag like this actor (Val Kilmer) does, then they don’t belong in his unit. And those 2 guys in that North Hollywood shootout had the vhs of this movie in their VCR before they hit the bank. They watched it right before doing it. And some Brazilian bank robbers had a poster of this film in their apartment.

Crazy sh!t. I’ve watched this scene way too many times now. It’s just too perfect and I don’t think I’ve seen a better one ever. And this was in 1995.

Yup, one of the most realistic shootout scenes ever made.

Just the audio is amazing, the echoes around the skyscrapers is real, not added in fake pew pew bullchit pædowood usually dubs over movies gunshots. I sometimes crank my klipsch surround sound and play the shootout scene and just sit there in awe.

They also neglected to tell anyone in the car chase scene that it was a movie being filmed. It wasn't exactly done on closed off streets with extras lol.

I read that they used actual blanks instead of editing the sound in. That didn’t surprise me because it definitely sounded more real than in other movies. I knew this because I’ve seen videos of real shootouts with similar weapons and I instantly made the connection.

That’s fukking crazy, lol. People must’ve been sh!tting their pants. I love how Val Kilmer went from zero to a hundred in a split second. He was smiling walking to the car and immediately drew his weapon to start spraying those cops. Zero hesitation whatsoever. True professional.

The only way I’d get excited about this would be if Chris Nolan directed it. He used the shootout scene from Heat as inspiration for the bank heist in the opening scene for The Dark Knight. He’s the only one I’d really trust not to fuk it up.

Yea I’d be fine with them leaving it alone.

The thing is, this movie was made nearly 3 decades ago. They certainly have all the tools necessary to at least do all the same sh!t. But they don’t.

Look at Jurassic Park in 1993. The dinosaurs looked so much more real compared to the sh!t they pump out now. It’s like some kind of reverse evolution. Makes no sense.

And all the woke/progressive sh!t is the poisonous icing on the cake.

I wish I saw Heat when I was younger because I used to go paintballing with my friends all the time and kinda sucked at it. I didn’t know about basic fire and maneuver tactics and would hesitate to advance. Didn’t know how to effectively use suppressing fire or anything, lol. You really gotta fukking move your ass if you wanna win. I had a long barrel Tippman 98 Custom and would try to snipe the opponent out too much. Like those Call of Duty players who camp out too much.

Well if anyone is gonna fuk up the sequel…..might as well be the guy who directed the first one. I think he knows what’s at stake here and will do his best to make it more than just another payday.

That's about the only movie scene I remember where gunshots felt like were a real threat. Like James Bond or Ahnold will pop 50,000 shots in one movie, and they have all the weight of a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

The sound design in Heat is too much real life. Even as dudes here are full-auto blazing away, it tells us that every shot is life or death.

For you Heatcels, Michael Mann didn't skimp on the sound design for Collateral either.

Back at that time things had to look and seem real, as they didn’t have the level of special effects we do now, nor the post production tools etc. also, people kind of “expected” more realism back then. Look at First Blood, Stallone actually does things they really teach. If you like car chase scenes, I suggest watching No Man’s Land, about a Porsche theft ring. Some amazing stunt driving in that movie.

For sure there’s a big difference between Heat and Jurassic Park. Only brought it up to reference the fact that they did more with less 30 years ago which is odd.

But yea when you think about it, how difficult is it really to make a shootout scene like the one in Heat? I’m not saying it’s easy but relatively speaking, I can’t think of a reason why they haven’t made one as good as this in almost 3 decades. Maybe you could make the case for Black Hawk Down which was probably significantly harder to film than Heat. But you really don’t need a sky high budget to make a great film.

Great movie & scene but they're legit firing like 90+ rounds before reloading, standard mag only held 20

They would be firing single shots especially from that long range



There's a reason all of the highest rated movies are from 1940-1980's; realism hasn't increased, CGI ruins movies for me

Marvel movies are perfect examples of how budget alone can't make a good film

It's really more about on-set effort and planning than tech nerds behind the scenes for something like this. I think too many in hollywood are scared by realistic combat and tend to move towards gun-play versions of crouching tiger hidden dragon - like how there are so many deaths that end in a perfectly placed bullet between the eyes. That **** always bothered me.
