It was cool i guess for a moment. The main character is a bit of a soy boy and all the evil people are white. The rest of the cast is black because netflix doing netflix ****. If you make a leading character white and male in todays age they have to have slight homo vibes and the rest of the cast MUST be black or female to fight racism and the male patriarchy. Beginning was chill but the last few episodes were total trash. It could have been great if they didn't play the representation/inclusion game.

Overall 4/10

For those who don't know, Neil Gaiman, the writer of the original comic book series, won the Eisner Award (essentially the Academy Award for comic books) 4 YEARS IN A ROW for writing Sandman! Even more pertinent/impressive is that Alan Moore, who has won the Eisner Award by far more times than any other major leading creative (artist or writer, rather than support such as inker, letterer, or colorist) had his winning streak interrupted by Neil Gaiman for those 4 years in a row. This is kind of like somebody deciding to come along and knock off somebody generally perceived as THE GOAT for 4 years in a row. How seriously boss is THAT? Additionally, he won the World Fantasy Award for writing, and this was the first time that a comic book transcended the scope of its industry and won that award.

As for what Rikter said about the Burgess boy being gay having nothing to do with any of the rest of the plot - not true. The story begins in England circa World War I, and his father is very disapproving of him, and cares more about his dead son than his living one, who is gay. So, there, that is something.

This series was originally written for Independent Comic Book audiences in the late 1980s to mid 1990s. It gradually built a huge cult following. This adaptation is extremely overdue. It is the most popular TV show on Netflix right now, in dozens of countries, for very, very good reason.

As for the changing of some characters' gender identities and ethnic backgrounds from the original source material, that's not really too inappropriate. It was written about 30 years ago for an audience different from what they were hoping to market it to today. So, they are getting with the times and expanding their viewer base - a viewer base that would not have read this 30 years ago. Nothing wrong with tem getting with the times in that way. Those are actually pretty superficial changes in the overall grand scheme of things - this series is about dreams, immortality, philosophy, history, art, mythology...so many things. Overall, they are remaining pretty true to the original source material, and that is the most important thing because in terms of critical reception within the comic book industry, really, there has never been a comic book series more critically acclaimed, so really, it shouldn't be messed with. And they're not messing with it - they're keeping it real and accurate.

It's really fukking woke even for Netflix's standard. I think 50% of the actors and actresses were black. Lulz. So diversity on this show means as many black people as possible. Also, I don't know how the comic books are, but a considerable amount of the characters on this show is either gay or lesbian. But the worst thing about this show isn't how woke it is, I just found it underwhelming. Boring.

Something about the main char's slightly monotone/indifferent dialogue and mannerisms was really appealing. Can't put my finger on what made it so cool though. It def made him come across as...goddly?

It's awful. I laughed at how cheesy their interpretation of hell is. It looked like Lucifer was holding a rock concert outside the vatican or something. And the demon who stole the mask looked like something I would see out of the series Charmed.

I wanted to like this show more but I didn't.

There was an unnecessary amount of gay.

But I will say... The episode where he meets death, and meets that guy at the bar every 100 years, was truly a great episode. If every episode hit like that one did it would have been a great show.

I'm a big fan of the comic book (GOAT imo). I wasn't sure what to expect, reading through the comments above, it seems true to the original plot. I will check it out.

Yeah. I feel you on this one. It's extremely overdue. I can see the great quality of it, overall, but it would have appealed to me a lot more in my 20s or early-to-mid 30s. But at least we are getting great special effects. And now it can reach a whole new generation and a broader audience, given the general demands of multicultural inclusivism of today.

They need to get out the message that they are doing this chronologically, with respect to the order of the storylines as they appeared in the original series, and that each season, if it's renewed all the way through enough seasons to tell the whole story, will only get better and better and the storylines only got better and better throughout the series. Just wait until "Season of Mists" and "Brief Lives" and "The Kindly Ones" are brought to the screen *crosses fingers*.

Why are you saying it isnt woke?

That's an objective lie.

Every character is gay/bi/tranny or the holy grail of perfection, black female, of whom are also typically lesbians.

Constantine is in the show. You know, constantine? The well known hellblazer comics Constantine.

That's who that was you know. Hellblazer and Sandman are both DC. Batman shows up in both their comics.

In the show they made Constantine a girl. I thought that was kind of cool actually. She ended up f*cking a black lesbian girl.

If they were a white man that wasnt LGBT, they were evil. And even then the writers decided to make one of the main antagonists gay cuz they ran out of characters to make gay and they wanted more like they just couldnt hemp themselves.

Everyone was something.

I legit stopped watching a good 5 or 6 episodes in because I was feeling what I could only describe as being "all gayed out"

It was during the tranny's prolonged stage performance I believe.

To the black masculine assistant "everyone knows your REALLY run the dreaming hur hur hurrr" "tell you before I tell dream? I have no problem with that AND NEITHER SHOULD ANY OF YOU WHITE PEOPLE WATCHING! SEE AS I KISS THE BOOT OF MY SUPERIOR HUMAN, DO AS I DO"

f*ck.

finished episode 10

to my surprise I did find it to significantly improve in quality in the second half of the season

despite the claims of it being "woke" it also didn't strike me as such

Its insanely woke. Idk how anyone can try to deny it. I made it through 6.5 episodes and I am pretty sure gay sex scenes outnumber straight like 10 to 1. John Constantine replaced by his lesbian daughter, lucifer being an old woman, the house of freaks in episode 7, etc.

That being said Episode 5 was very good and episode 6 is like a 10/10. The story of the man who lived forever and he visited with every 100 years should be a hbo show by itself.
