Inoki-one of the biggest stars in wrestling history. Also a dodgy conman-even went as far as to claim he was responsible for Saddam releasing 41 Japanese hostages during the Gulf War, after flying there against advice. Flew a load of wrestlers to North Korea in 1995 against advice as well.

Gotch has to one of the few that could suplex Andre and hold a bridge for a pin while in Japan.

That is real fighting. No rules, rounds, weight classes, gloves right?

Inoki was the man who first held events with bouts with combatants from different martial arts backgrounds and made it popular in the orient. He is credited worldwide as The Godfather of mma. Whether in a roundabout way or so, he deserves acknowledgement in the discussion of the early days of mixed martial arts.

Aren't the clips of Andre in WWF much later in his life?
He developed some hue back problems and could barely move. They just ushered him out like a dying animal in his last days..pretty sad, but that giant disease is crippling

It would be almost impossible to determine the origins of MMA...there have been mixed rules matches dating back over 100 years. Inoki was definitely an early pioneer in Japanese MMA though thanks to Gotch.

Inoki was definitely a pioneer of mixed martial arts thanks to Gotch his form of grappling and hooking and faced many opponents from all dominant disciplines of combat sports like

Akram Pahalwan in Pakistan
Willie Williams of Kyokushin Karate
Olympic judo gold medalist Willem Ruska
WBA and WBC World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali

They were at the time billed as real exhibitions but they were likely worked ie staged but because he was the first man to promote mma cards that did feature legit fighters. In billed matches from different backgrounds. He is credited as such a pioneer of the combat sport we know as mixed martial arts.

The only reason skeptics dispute that is 1. Lack of knowledge of fight history. 2. The fact inoki was a pro wrestler.

But if you dig deeper you’d find out there no way that pride, and ufc would exist as it is now if not his promotion of the first mma cards or for pro wrestling (specifically pro wrestling in Japan). Namely NJPw without that, there is no mma the way it is today.

Andre was never the same after he got slammed by the Hulkster in front of 3 billion people at the Pontiac Silverdome brother! Hogan tapped into the everlasting indomitable force of Hulkamainia, had the 24 inch pythons pumped, and he scoop slammed all 4000lb of that Giant Andre. Once a giant is slammed he loses his soul, Jack!. Andre died a few days later. WWE pulled a Weekend at Bernies the next Wrestlemania and had King Haku puppeteer the corpse of ANdre in a match against the Demolition, Axe and Smash. Needless to say he got his stinkin' teeth kicked in arrgghhh!

Gotch learned his conditioning from the Pehlwani wrestlers of India/middle east. The training there using yogic calisthenics, clubs and maces helps build a unique type of strength.

He was quite slim until the mid 1980's & could move pretty well still, but 1985 was when his weight started getting out of hand & his joints started going. Maeda basically embarrassed him in a match in 1986 that turned into something of a shoot, with a drunk Andre kicked over & unable to get back up & Inoki having to jump in to stop it. He had to have surgery in 1986 before the WM 3 match with Hogan & was a total joke after that-he would do a spot where he would get tied in the ropes pretty much every match to recover & had to hold the ropes when he was moving around & didn't work that much.

WWWF/WWF was his base, but Vince Sr was smart enough to know he couldn't work as a full time performer, so he hired him out to the other promoters & he toured around doing short runs in the territories. That all changed in the mid 1980's when Vince Jr decided to go national & global & he was then solely in New York.

I saw one he hit on I think Terry Funk a while back from around 1973-1975 & it was the quickest & best executed thing I have ever seen. Not the one on Reddit.
