Comparing my life vs my grandfather's during Communist Eastern Europe
My grandfather died last year at age 90 and he told me 1 month before passing that his life was a blast.
Makes me wonder. Communism was evil and bad for the average person as my country is much better off now as a NATO full ally under a free market.
But I feel like my grandfather had a lot more long-lasting dopamine releasing events and satisfaction.
- He had one of the top jobs during that time - State Security agent (just the country's version of KGB). Retired as a General a few years before communist GOV collapsed.
- Women loved the idea of being the housewife of a State Security higher up. Many fathers wanted to arrange marriages with my grandfather.
- Him and grandma were the only one in a whole row of flats to have a phone due to privileges.
- He was brainwashed by Soviet propaganda but woke up every day with a purpose to defend Soviet ideals and stability.
- He didn't have to think about which corporation to monkey branch to for better pay or to stress about MBA made-up degree school reputations. He worked with a passion and got vouchers to enjoy holiday with wife and kids in ski resorts/holiday resorts.

If you were a higher up in the FBI or CIA (equal position to what he had) you'd love your life even more. It's not capitalism, it's your place in the system you're unhappy with
