Is the balance of power about to shift ALLLL the way back to employers?

Srs. I worked in management during the last recession and all of the difficult employees got a major dose of reality.

With all the warnings of the economy about to tank, is the market about to self correct on all the employees who are using the "great resignation" as a way to demand more than they are due? I already see rumblings about layoffs and hiring freezes in major industries.

I work in manufacturing and we obviously got smashed hard during the covid lockdowns. Hard AF to hire anyone worth a sh!t the last year or more. It's forced us to get more efficient at running a clean crew, dial in our processes so we can run more time unmanned. We're at the point now we don't really need to hire anyone, especially at inflated wages.
I think you'll see this more everywhere, companies were forced to run lean, saw where they could trim the fat & the deadwood and won't be trying to hire

A. Employers have been ****ing over employees for time immemorial - the amounts workers are asking for are not unreasonable
B. What's wrong with WFH? I guarantee you any competent Software Engineer is getting WAY more done WFH than in an office. I would wager its the same for lots of professions.

I can't wait. As a manager of a construction company it's been hell. Tiptoeing around workers feelings and putting up with late, missing random days, etc...all to avoid them leaving cuz Wed have no one.

No. The peak of Baby Boomers being born was 1960. So right now they can collect early Social Security early at age 62, as many people have for decades, or they can keep working a few more years. Now and the next decade are the peak of Baby Boomer retirement, leaving a big labor demand gap. And the "gig economy" has lots of people working on the side, sometimes doing side gigs full time, leaving lots of traditional businesses desperate.

It will have to, eventually. An employee friendly market (more jobs than workers) in high-inflation Biden's America will ultimately lead to a wage-price spiral, which will put inflation on turbo fuk-you mode.

The powers that be want inflation to pay their deficits, but they don't want it spiraling out of control Weimar Germany style. So they are already working to shut it down with a recession this winter.

Everything is cyclic but for a lot of industries the employment correction wont swing too significantly..

The issue today isnt that the economy is so good, that its creating opportunity and subsequently the employees are in control. Its that so many people have simply dropped out of the work force and are unwilling to work at any pay rate. We can expect a significant recession/depression but even with layoffs we are probably going to find zero and not a net negative that significantly swings things in favor to the employer.

I do expect the outrageous offers and benefits to go away as we seek baseline through this recession. I dont think we see the employers gaining the upper hand nearly as much as they have in recent cycles because there are just far fewer employees in the job pool. They only way it swings in the employers favor is if we hit a full on depression and that is possible....and then companies survival is is just as much in question as the employees jobs are in question.

It depends on how fast employees and job seekers will give in. If folks keep turning down chit offers, they’ll eventually have to get better.

There’s no employee shortage for positions that pay well, it’s only chitty jobs that are hurting for people.

This. My company pulled in the people who weren't performing up to par at home years ago. All of my reviews while working from home have been great and my team does not need to be in the office. The day or two a week I go in it makes no difference for anything that I do. My team members and I are the only ones who talk to each other. There is no collaboration going on in the office. When we're home we talk to each other throughout the day over IM when needed.

As for layoffs my company has never been hit hard by a recession that I know of. They've been around for over 100 years.

Companies are easily laying off loads of workforce because they know there is endless supply of new employees eagerly ready and waiting to get hired once they are needed again. You are expendable, let's not make any mistake about it even up to C level.
