Got pulled over by the cops in Mexico (Tj)

Dear Diary,

So, it turns out you cannot make a right turn at a red light in Mexico.

Overall they were really nice. They wanted to charge me 4000 pesos (about $200) for the infraction. I told him I didn't have the money (I do), but then I remembered from my Spanish class that you can haggle the price of a ticket, lol. Long story short, I got the price down to about 1000 pesos ($50). Of course he wanted cash so I had him escorted me to the nearest ATM.

I'm pretty sure I just doubled his salary for the day. Oh well, lesson learned.

Thats part of my suspicion, but after the cop left, I searched it on google and it is an actual law. I was probably the only 2020 model car for miles and the cars that did look new were dirty (and I recently had mine waxed and tire shine)

Well, what I did IS against the law and granted they probably did throw the book at me for an offense they probably overlook when the locals do it. Regardless, being in trouble with the authorities in a foreign country whose language i'm only moderately conversational in, is not high on my list. There's no point in making a big stink out of something where I have literally no power in the outcome.

...I'll take it back...Its bad, but oddly not much worse than any slummy area in any major city in America.

I remember an interview of Jesse Ventura where he said the Federales pulled him over trying to squeeze some exorbitant amount of money out of him after he left office. Jesse said he flashed his state government ID and said he’d make one call to Vicente Fox and Calderon and their jobs would be gone. No clue if he even know the Mexican presidents, as a Minnesota governor I doubt there was much interaction, but just being a U.S. government official was a get out of jail free card.

Maybe get some fake ID that suggests you work for homeland security or some other agency. Doubt the cops would even bother to check or know how to check, they might wave you on just to be safe.

So much this.

I paid $200.00 fine in Thailand for riding a scooter without a helmet. Worth getting ripped off to avoid the hassle. Not getting stuck in some 3rd world country over a couple hundred $

You can actually get away with not paying them anything. They don't want to take your chit back to the police station.

And how was I suppose to do that when we could barely communicate with one another in the first place? I feel like I lucked out getting the fine dropped to $50.

Yep, I felt like I was risking it even haggling the price. They're essentially in complete control over the situation and If they felt I was giving them a hard time they could have made my day far chittier by deciding to search my car and conveniently "finding" some illicit drug.

actual law sure but he pocketed all that chit. did you even get any paperwork?

You can turn right at red lights legally:

Translation of bolded: At crossroads if you're at a red light, you have to stop and look at both sides to check for pedestrians or vehicles before making the turn.
yeah, I saw that. On top of turning on a red light, my maneuver was also a rolling stop which is illegal even here in the states.

and even if I did nothing wrong, how would I even fight that? It would cost FAR more time and money than $50 to deal with the rigamarole of being taken down town and booked while my car sits in god knows where and probably scrapped for parts or sent to some tow yard where i'd have to pay money to get it out.
