Boxers Fracture - anyone got experience?

What up misc fam. So I'm a miscer which means I'm buff as hell, but also have mental issues lol. Got in a fight with the side of a fridge and it was a one hit KO. I hit it, and it KOd my right hand.

Had been drinking of course, so first few days thought I just sprained it all. Actually did a few pulls ups testing it out, going on with my day ordering tacos and chit. Was able to drive, make a fist and stretch my hand. At the 5th day I could tell the pinky knuckle (metacarpal) was likely f*cked up. Got a bump a half inch or so where the knuckle usually goes. Pain wasn't too bad but don't want to live with an injury for no reason. Went to ER, confirmed closed displaced fracture of fifth metacarpal. The doc was a cool bro, probably a miscer. Told me it actually didn't look too bad, but still referred to a hand specialist ortho. Said the specialist may just say it's not angular too bad and cast for 6 weeks. Or he may want to set it. How, I don't know. Surgery with pins, or a closed reset.

My appointment with ortho is tomorrow, day 9 after the fridge fight. Any of you guys had this before? Was wondering, did you go to the doc? If so did they reset it and how? Also, how long were you casted and how long before you could go back to heavy lifting (of sloots), and boxing.. I don't just box fridges.

Also any lasting effects? I'm wondering how long I'll be out of lifting with that hand, and how long I need to wipe with my left. (Broke my dominant hand) until then I'm gonna be working my core and glutes to the max of course

Also yes I'm a dumb f*ck and deserve it. Fridge had never done me wrong before. Stay safe fam. I will rep you all as my cannons refill

You’ve already had a bit of healing. If he wants to reset it he’ll likely put you under to do so… and if he resets it I doubt he’ll do it closed. You’ll get an ORIF.

It’ll have to be angled pretty badly for him to want to intervene.

Oh yeah: a boxer fracture is technically a break in your fifth metacarpal. You just have a boring ass fourth metatarsal break. No cool name. We can name it a refrigerator fracture.

G’luck.
You have my word as a Schons.

Thanks. My bad, yeah that's what I meant. Fifth metacarpal. It's the neck of the pinky knuckle for sure. Fridge fracture works too. Well, chit man I guess I'm hoping he will put me under. I'd like it fixed fully. Hope I get that option. Damn I should have gone to ER right when I did it.

Fridge has the Tiniest dent. Still cold though.

Also thanks mate

My brother broke a knuckle punching a guy in the top of the head. He has a metal one now. You know that feeling like you think there is one piece of pizza left so you gobble the piece you have without enjoying it well I thought I had 2 beers left so I downed one without enjoying it. I went to get the last one and it was gone. I got so mad that I took the cab and started smashing it on my head. I woke up 39 minutes later in a pool of blood. I actually sliced. My head open. I went to take a crap and I guess my parents saw all the blood and calmed 911. While I was sitting on the cracker the ambulance crew came in abs grabbed me. I was screaming I got to wipe my ass but they wouldn’t let me. They were like we have a fighter. We are going to save you sir. Stop fighting!! Lmao

Sorry, one more question biomed brah. If the break is at an acceptable angle, but still angled, will that cause issues? If I have the choice between surgery and no surgery, long term would surgery be better to get it as close to 100% back? If it's just cosmetic I don't mind. But I wouldn't want to be stuck with any unneeded weakness

Had it, did not go to doc. I don't think it was a terribly bad case because I didn't see any deformation and swelling was minimal. Took a month to stop hurting during daily tasks and two months to pretty much heal. No permanent issues thankfully.

Edit: apparently it was a fridge fracture

Lol. Thanks brah, I'm not sure what to take from this except maybe I should stop drinking for good. Have had plenty of issues, but yeah I was in a pretty big rage at the time. Worst part is I have a ****in heavy bag in the garage I hit all the time. I seriously shouldn't drink anymore. Can't control my anger when I get to that level.

Well I'm hoping it's like yours. I see a little deformation but swelling was minimal and I could do everything. Just thought man I don't want to **** my body up for life better be sure. But didn't hurt too much.

**** I wish I would, but it was an in law (night before) who has been asking for it for multiple years from the family. Would have been much worse had I broke his jaw. Because I would have.

Got one when I was 12. Got mad and punched a door. Hid it from my mom for 3 days until the pain became too unbearable. 6 weeks in a cast. No big deal.

Obviously a 12 year old heals more quickly than a grown man.

I got one on my left pinky. Didnt get it checked out for 2 weeks. Got a stent & a plaster cast and kept it there for 3-4weeks. If i close my palm my pinky goes like 20degrees more bent inwards than the right one.

All depends on angular displacement. No surgery could cause as little as mild deformity all the way up to compromised strength/grip/function.

Would have to eval personally and look at imaging to give any more detail.

I had it on my right hand. I was in a fight in high school when someone spit on me. I didn't have surgery. I was holding my broken hand with my other hand on the school bus on the way home and the bumps in the road I could feel the bone moving and rubbing on the other bone/ broken bone ends rubbing. My mom took me to the hospital when she got home I knew it was broken. Then just x-rays and an orthopedic doctor shaped some sort of splint thing and the nurse wrapped it in a cast for the normal 6 weeks. Got the cast taken off. Dont remember even doing physical therapy or anything. My wrist was extremely weak though and I had baseball tryouts 3 days after the cast was taken off. I could barely throw the ball or swing a bat, they probably thought I was retarded or something. Idk it sucks and hurts sometimes to this day almost 20 years later.

I had surgery to set it. They put a pin in it. I forget how long it was in there (6 weeks maybe). a quick surgery to remove the pin. Then rehab to get it flexing correctly. Involved dipping hand into molten wax, then ultrasound treatment. At home I would boil water, put in a bowl, set my hand in, and then do flexibility exercises. You get use to the pain of putting your hand in extremely hot liquid. My had was good to go after a couple of months

Well, guess mine wasn't too bad. Only moved it 2mm and he said it will be fine. He said **** a splint (he didn't like immobilization), just buddy tape for two or three weeks then work my way back up to weights based on my own pain levels. Just don't be stupid. Probably 3 months before I can go 100% on a heavy bag or fridge again.

Cool ass surgeon. Cheeky f*cker said I hit like a girl.

If no crossing over or pathologic scissoring, ulnar gutter cast for 3 weeks. Def no longer than 4 weeks or it’ll get very still. Will need OT after that to mobilize fingers and fine motor skills. NOn weight bearing for 6 weeks, other than using your phone or writing.

Long term effects: will have a bump at the fracture site which is annoying but tolerable. No functional deficit but higher rate of refracture if you punch hard enough.

Source: I’m an orthopedic trauma surgeon and see these on daily basis. You’ll be fine.

Thanks dude. I just got seen today (post 17) and he did exactly what you said. Break was 2mm of movement. Except he took off the ulnar gutter cast and buddy taped it. Hope that doesn't bring complications. Sucks about the higher chance of break. Guess I better fix my chitty punching form

Edit: pretty cool we got an orthopedic trauma surgeon miscin with the rest of us degenerates

Just read that. I agree with that, you can buddy tape it if it’s stable, that prevents stiffness that comes with the cast, and therefore need for subsequent OT to mobilize. Likely will remove the buddy tape in 3-4 weeks and cut you off with full weight bearing around 4-6 weeks.

I was punching some wooden dummy and fractured and dislocated my 4th and 5th cmc joint, the hamate bone broke into half. They fixed it with k wire pins.
I will say get the surgery, if the bone grow out of alignment your grip is permanently ****ed like right now, mine is ****ed. Because i stupidly decided to try fix the alignment by buddy taping when i had my pins in, so both my 3rd and 4th finger is out of alignment. Your right muscle will atrophy

Sir can i check if its possible to realign this
https://ibb.co/0CHMJ0h
as the right arrows should be the correct alignment but the yellow circle show both the finger pulled together and result in a flared out instead of straight alignment
