Arch-cels on suicide watch - new IPF benching rules
tl;dr New rule is "must lower the underside of both elbow joints to or below the top surface of each respective shoulder joint."
Just saw this from Oleksiy Torokhtiy. New rules to take effect at the start of 2023.
Full new rules of disqualification:
1. Failure to observe the Chief Referee’s signals at the commencement, during, or after completion of the lift.
2. Any change in the elected lifting position during the lift i.e. any raising movement of the head, shoulders, or buttocks, from the bench, or lateral movement of hands on the bar.
3. Heaving, or sinking the bar into the chest or abdominal area after it is motionless in such a way as to make the lift easier.
4. Any downward movement of the bar in the course of being pressed out.
5. Bar is not lowered to the chest or abdominal area i.e. not reaching the chest or abdominal area, or the bar is touching the belt.
6. Failure to press the bar to straight arms’ length elbows locked at the completion of the lift.
7. Contact with the bar or the lifter by the spotter/loaders between the Chief Referee’s signals, in order to make the lift easier.
8. Any contact of the lifter’s feet with the bench or its support. Lifting of the feet is not allowed. Foot movement is permissible but must remain flat on the platform.
9. Deliberate contact between the bar and the bar rests support.
10. Failure to lower the underside of both elbow joints to or below the top surface of each respective shoulder joint
11. Failure to comply with any of the items outlined under the Rules of Performance.

I've always said powerlifting is a joke because of these dikheads finding a legal loop hole

The british bench record is actually set by a dikhead that decided to do that chit, he benched something like 500lbs using that 1 inch ROM chit. Absolute joke.

interesting. this will likely effect women and the lighter weight classes the most because they can take the most advantage of it. but there are some really strong benchers that don't arch that much so they'll be good. I think the number of people whose arch is egregious is overstated but now that more attention has been brought to this as of late I think the IPF had no choice but to address it. Alot of top lifters aren't really bad. But still I think eliminating 2 inch ROM pressing is needed. It's supposed to be a test of "power" or "strength", not who can perform gymnastics the best. 2 inch pressing doesn't keep in spirit of who is the "strongest".
it'll be interesting how this plays out in practicality. the front judge will be able to clearly see it but I wonder how easy it is to judge from the sides. brb grabbing a protractor to measure the shoulder/elbow angle.
lol funny thing is sumo deadlifts are probably next on he chopping block "arms must be outside the legs at the start of the lift"

Probably too late to save powerlifting, it's been a joke for decades because they allowed people to do chit like that. Now nobody cares about it

I am curious to see if they do anything about sumo (or even the squat though). Does seem like a lot of decent conventional pullers have switched over to sumo in recent years.

There is something so wonderful about those gals that say they can bench some wild weight compared to bw and as soon as they are on the bench that spine looks like a phucking slinky. Of course moving the weight around 3 inches in total
