Botox or Mouthguard for TMJ issues

Sup misc,

Wanted to see if anyone out there has gotten Botox for the purpose of reducing/eliminating TMJ symptoms?

I've always been one to grind my teeth pretty bad at night, which seems to be a root cause for a lot of other symptoms such as nerve pain, headaches, tight neck/shoulders. Recently discovered that some people will get Botox injections to relax the offending muscles, thereby reducing or eliminating the symptoms of doing such. Hoping some of you can provide some insight as to why I should/shouldn't do it, or why I should go for a mouthguard instead. I've tried using a cheap mouthguard before but would always end up spitting it out in my sleep, which is why I'm leaning toward Botox.

Reps for any insightful answers/help. and for your time:

Spoiler!

Wife has tmj

Botox didn’t work
Mouth guard lasts about a month before it breaks

The only thing that helped is getting jaw massages (srs, like at a massage clinic) once or twice a month

Depends why you have it. Hers stems from anxiety so it’s nonstop clenching rather than grinding. Clenching tenses up the muscles so the massages help undo the knots

Hm interesting.

When you say didn't work, do you mean like at all? or did it just wear off quickly? Also concerned that I would destroy a mouth guard, or the amount of clenching might still result in the same symptoms, just without the wear and tear on the teeth.

I honestly don't know why I have it. I don't have anxiety really, yet I still catch myself clenching a lot when I'm awake. And when I'm sleeping, I'm told that I grind my teeth really badly all night.

The Botox didn’t work at all. The mouth guard worked but it was too expensive to buy them on a regular basis. But this is just one example. Botox helps a lot of people and there doesn’t seem to be a downside of trying it. So no harm in trying

Do you intake a lot of caffeine/stims? That’s a contributing factor

Bruh my dentist told me I was grinding my teeth in my sleep about 2 years ago. I honestly thought she was full of chit, no girl I'd been with had ever noticed this.

Anyway they wanted $300 for a molded mouthguard. I said fuk that but thought it's not worth the risk of destroying my teeth so I buy these instead:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They last me a good 6 months each one and the dentist has said my degradation isn't getting worse so I guess they work.

Hm interesting. Yeah I'm leaning towards botox, even though it's more pricey up front it should last 5-6 months assuming I respond well to it. Whereas if I have to get a new mouthguard every month or two that could be even more expensive.

I don't really take any stims, don't drink coffee in mornings, don't do energy drinks or preworkout either.

yeah my dentist hasn't said anything about degradation, but i've been told my multiple gfs that I grind really bad at night, as well as a couple friends. Mostly concerned about the other issues that come from grinding. I get bad migraines/headaches regularly, earlier this week woke up not being able to chew on my left side without some random nerve pain in my left temple/behind the left eye. Constantly waking up with a very sore/tired jaw, occasionally it's gotten so bad I can't open my mouth more than a cm and eating anything is a painful experience.

How much does the one you linked cost? can't see it in US amazon

Go to an orthodontist to get a thinner retainer made. It's expensive (~300$), but it's worth it. I probably get 2-3 years out of mine and I'm a heavy clencher, I don't think I grind too bad though, so you might go through them faster.

Idk if it's cause my ortho is trying to protect his revenue, but he said the ones made by dentists are too thick and slide people's jaws forward which can fk them up as well.

Honestly, this is probably not something you should cheap out on.

yeah i mean i know if i do cheap out, it's gonna get spit out just like all the previous mouthguards i've tried.

I'll loook into it for sure. 2-3 years on one is solid retention.

Ya, and they might look into problems causing the grinding/caused by the grinding. Just don't let them upsell you too hard cause I know a lot of orthos will try and pull that chit.

That one is 20 bucks. But dude, I get 0 symptoms from this stuff. It sounds like you got a serious case, I wouldn't risk going the cheap option, doesn't seem like something you'd want to get worse.

hmm yeah. I'm gonna have to spend a grip to get any real results I think. Got a dentist appt coming up soon so I think i'll ask them for their input, and see what's what.

This. Comfy as hell and last around 5 years (mine has). But the real game changer for me on top of that (as i was suffering chronic jaw pain throughout the day, every day), was low dose Endep prescribed by my doctor. Previously a depression medication (now very much superseded), in low dosage its a muscle relaxant. Fkn changed my life.
